Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Release Date Is September

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is definitely one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year and even though we had a vague idea when the South Koreans will announce its next-gen phablet, until now we didn’t knew the exact launch date of the handset.

So far, all the clues were indicating that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date will be early fall, but now a Korean analyst has confirmed that the Galaxy Note 2 follow up will be indeed announced in September. To be honest, I’m not surprised at all to hear that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date was set for September. Why? I’m glad you’ve asked.

The pattern of the previous Samsung Galaxy Note launches was the first clue to hint towards a September release date for the Galaxy Note 3. The South Korean phone maker is usually announcing the Galaxy Note members around the IFA 2013 Berlin. The first Galaxy Note was announced at the aforementioned tech fair, while its successor, the popular Galaxy Note 2 was introduced only a couple of days ahead of the IFA Berlin 2012 debut, during a special Samsung Unpacked event.

This year’s IFA Berlin edition will open its gates for the public on September 6th and, as I know Samsung, the company will want to repeat last year’s move and set the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date in the week prior to IFA, in order to get all the media attention it seeks. This basically means that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be introduced during an Unpacked event in the September 1-5 time frame.

Another reason why Samsung would want the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to be announced in September is related to the iPhone 5S announcement. Apple is expected to present the new iPhone soon after a couple of weeks after the buzz created around IFA Berlin settles down, then introduce the iPhone 5S on the market a fortnight after the launch event. This basically means that the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will hit the market almost in the same time, which would help the South Korea-based giant to bite an even larger chunk of iPhone’s market share.

Even though the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the direct competitor of the iPhone 5S, a powerful device like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is capable of stealing some of Apple’s customers.

In case you are wondering what the rumor mill has to say about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs, learn that all the reports are pointing that the Snapdragon 800 platform will used to underpin the phablet. We are talking about the chipset announced by Qualcomm at CES 2013, based on four Krait 400 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz and Adreno 330 GPU.

In my opinion, Samsung will launch two Galaxy Note 3 variants, just like it happened with the Samsung Galaxy S4. One powered by the Snapdragon 800 and another based on the company’s proprietary octo-core Exynos 5 Octa SoC. Unlike the SGS4, the Exynos 5 Octa unit of the Galaxy Note 3 will most likely be clocked at 1.8 GHz.

Rumor has it that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will sport a 5.9-inch display with full HD resolution, Super AMOLED technology and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. There’s no doubt that Samsung wants the Note 3 to be a successful smartphone and a high-quality full HD display will definitely come to help.

The rest of Galaxy Note 3 specs are nothing to surprise: 2 GB of RAM, 16/32/64 GB of storage plus microSD card support, all standards of WiFi, 4G LTE, NFC, IR blaster, Bluetooth 4.0, and microUSB 2.0.

In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will probably look like a Galaxy S4 on steroids, sticking to the same design language introduced in March with the debut of the flagship device. The next-gen Sammy phablet will also borrow the 13 megapixel of the Galaxy S4 and all the features of the TouchWiz Nature UX interface. Talking about TouchWiz, the Galaxy Note 3 will most likely run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, unless Google changes its mind and launches Android 4.3 in the meantime.

Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Stability OTA Update now available for Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100

The build number of this new OTA Update for Galaxy Note 2 N7100 is N7100XXDME6 and it has been pushed out mostly for European-based devices. The build date is May 31st, which is the latest version available and it might be the last one in the Android 4.1.2 update series. Samsung is expected to upgrade their Note 2 device starting with Q3 of 2013.

Facebook for iOS updated with status update emoticons, improved sharing options

 

Facebook has updated its iOS app today, adding a feature, status update emoticons, that was recently added to its web interface.

This allows users to “emote” with a number of icons based on category. There are seven: Feeling, Watching, Reading, Listening to, Drinking, Eating and Playing, each with little icons or photos representing specific Facebook groups. So, if you’re too lazy to type “Watching Walking Dead,” you can now just find the show in a list and post it.

Facebook has also added new granular sharing settings, making it easier to specify who sees a status update.

Smugmug camera app comes to Android

The new app includes the ability to display full screen slideshows of images and lets you configure your upload preferences to automatically upload as you capture images or do it periodically on demand.

The app also can download galleries, automatically or on demand, so pictures and videos can be viewed on a mobile device even when no internet connection is available for offline access.

Shadowrun Returns Coming to iPad, Android, PC & Mac on July 25

Shadowrun Returns, the latest video game adaption set in the Shadowrun cyberpunk universe will come to the iPad, Android, PC and Mac on July 25.

Started as a Kickstarter project last year Shadowrun Returns is an attempt to make a cyberpunk game as great as the acclaimed Super Nintendo Shadowrun game. The new game is an isometric turn-based RPG that’s based on the Shadowrun pen-and-paper RPG, unlike the 2007 shooter set in the universe.

The Shadowrun universe combines science-fiction advanced technology with a touch of fantasy elements. It’s common to encounter dwarven hackers working side-by-side with elven sorcerers in the Shadowrun universe.

Like many cyberpunk worlds, corporations dominate the world of Shadowrun, often employing the player and their team to perform some form of corporate espionage.

The game will come with a campaign created by developer Harebrained Schemes set in future Seattle called “The Dead Man’s Switch,” though the developer hopes it’s just the first of many stories gamers will enjoy. The game will come with the Shadowrun Returns Editor which lets gamers act as Game Masters, crafting their own story and setting for other players to enjoy. Gamers can edit the entire campaign or create their own entirely from scratch.

The Shadowrun Returns Editor will come with the PC version of the game. It’s not clear if iPad and Android gamers will have the chance to create their own campaigns or play through new campaigns.

Some Kickstarter backers will gain access to the game editor two weeks before the game’s release, so gamers may have multiple campaigns to choose from on the game’s July 25 worldwide release.

The game is currently available for pre-order on Steam for $17.99, but will cost $19.99 when the game comes out. The iPad and Android versions of the game will presumably come at the same cost or slightly lower.

You Should Wait for the Nexus 7 2

While it didn’t announce it at Google I/O 2013, Google is heavily rumored to be debuting a newNexus 7, currently dubbed Nexus 7 2, sometime later this year. And while we still don’t have a Nexus 7 2 release date, official features or a price, those interested in a new Android tablet would be wise to hold off and wait for Google to deliver its new 7-inch Nexus 7 2.

Last year, at Google I/O 2012, Google took the stage and announced an assortment of new products. The three main announcements consisted of the ill-fated Nexus Q, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and of course, the 7-inch Nexus 7 that went up for pre-order that day and arrived a few weeks later in the month of July.

The Nexus 7 2 is likely on the way. We take a look at what consumers should wait.

The Nexus 7 went on to become one of the more popular tablets on the planet as it beat Apple’s iPad mini to shelves and in true Google fashion, combined stellar specifications with an affordable price tag. Times are changing though and the Nexus 7 appears to be at the end of its rope. Indeed, it’s still available in the Google Play Store but rumors suggest that something new is on the way.

Evidence, credible evidence at that, has suggested that Asus and Google have cooked up a new Nexus tablet for arrival sometime later this year, possibly as soon as next month. That device is known as the Nexus 7 2 and from the looks of things, it will replace the Nexus 7 on the Google Play Store as the company’s premier 7-inch Nexus tablet.

Of course, its arrival presents a dilemma for buyers. Those looking for a tablet now might be enamored with the current Nexus 7, another Android tablet or the iPad mini from Apple.

However, we think it’s in the best interest of tablet buyers to wait for the Nexus 7 2 from Google. Here’s why.

Why You Should Wait for the Nexus 7 2

You Won’t Have to Wait Long

We’re not saying that consumers will want to buy the Nexus 7 2 when it arrives, but what we are saying is that consumers should wait to buy a tablet, specifically a 7-inch tablet, before the Nexus 7 2 arrives. And maybe the biggest reason to wait is that a launch should be coming within the next few weeks.

Rumors have suggested that Google will follow up the July launch of the original Nexus 7 with a July launch for the Nexus 7 2. A specific date isn’t confirmed and that information is far from confirmed, however, it makes sense, especially now that the device has seemingly passed through the FCC and Bluetooth SIG. Both of those are road blocks on the way to release.

Google is also rumored to be releasing Android 4.3 Jelly Bean a few weeks after the June 26th release of the HTC One Nexus and Galaxy S4 Nexus and it could be that Google uses the Nexus 7 2 to launch it.

At this point, it seems that we may be just a few weeks away from an announcement and those who are in the market for a new tablet would be wise to hold onto their money for a few weeks.

Longevity

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons why consumers would be smart to wait for the Nexus 7 2 announcement. One of them is that the Nexus 7 2 is going to last owners longer than the Nexus 7, simply because Google will support it for longer than its aging tablet.

Typically, Nexus devices see several big name Android updates before Google cuts them off. The older Nexus 7 likely still has a few updates left in it but the Nexus 7 2 will likely last for at least a year longer.

The Nexus 7 2 will have a longer life thanks to software.

What this means is that users buying the Nexus 7 instead of the Nexus 7 2 will be investing in a device that is likely to miss out on future updates. For some, that will be acceptable but we think that those who bought the Nexus 7 instead will be regretting that decision when the Nexus 7 misses out on a big Android update down the road.

Better Battery Life

The Nexus 7 possessed decent enough battery life for a cheap, 7-inch slate though the tablet became mired in issues after the Android 4.2 update which saw the introduction of battery drain and slow charging issues, issues that we’ve seen first-hand. Those problems might be tackled with an Android 4.3 update but that won’t stop the Nexus 7 2 from possessing even better battery life.

Rumor don’t suggest that the Nexus 7 2 will come with a larger battery than the Nexus 7. In fact, it looks like they will be similar in size. However, the Nexus 7 will be coming with a next-generation CPU that should mean enhanced performance and improved battery life. The Snapdragon 600 chip from Qualcomm that is thought to be on board should help to keep Nexus 7 2 battery life stable and we wouldn’t be surprised to see some other tweaks that help to enhance it.

It would be surprising to see a next-generation Nexus 7 tablet arrive with less or similar battery life in a world where amazing battery life is one of the features that determines whether a device succeeds or fails.

You’re a Gamer

That processor isn’t just going to help with battery life. In fact, the processor and its speed-enhanced Adreno 320 GPU should help to offer improved gaming for those that love to use their tablet for that purpose. Games should perform better than they did on the original Nexus 7 and they should look better as well thanks to a rumored resolution change on the Nexus 7.

Better Screen Than iPad mini

This could be the Nexus 7 2.

One of the biggest additions that Asus and Google are said to be making to the Nexus 7 with the Nexus 7 2 is a 7-inch high-resolution display that checks in with 1080p resolution, same as many of the big name smartphones on the market.

What this means is that content on the Nexus 7 2 should look absolutely gorgeous, something that should excite those who plan to read books, play games, or watch movies on their tablet. If it’s true, it will also mean that content will blow away content on the Nexus 7 in the looks department.

This also means that the screen on the Nexus 7 2 should be better than the display found on the iPad mini which doesn’t have one of Apple’s Retina displays.

While Apple is expected to introduce an iPad mini 2 with a Retina display later on this year, the Nexus 7 2 will likely have the jump on Apple.

4G LTE

One of the big features that the FCC filing suggested that the Nexus 7 2 has on board is 4G LTE support. The original Nexus 7 does not have this ability and instead relies on the 3G networks of AT&T and T-Mobile.

4G LTE would mean much faster data speeds on AT&T and T-Mobile and from the filing, it seems that the door is open for a Verizon Nexus 7 2 as well thanks to capable bands being on board.

LTE is a huge upgrade over 3G so those looking to buy a cellular tablet will certainly want to wait for the Nexus 7 2 as it should have those fast data speeds on board when it arrives.

Will Be as Cheap as Nexus 7

The last reason to wait for the Nexus 7 2 is because the price of the Nexus 7 2 shouldn’t be too far off from the Nexus 7′s cheap price tag. Rumors suggest that we could see a price increase up to $220 for the Nexus 7 2 but we don’t expect that to happen.

Instead, we expect the Nexus 7 2 to arrive with a $199 price tag for the Wi-Fi only 16GB model and a $250 price for the 32GB model. These are the same prices as the Nexus 7 now and given the upgrades of the Nexus 7 2, it’s in the consumers best interest to simply wait for the new model.

iPhone 6 Concept Comes to Life from iOS 7

A new iPhone 6 concept pairs a larger display with new features from iOS 7 to show what Apple’s next totally new iPhone design could look like.

The iPhone 6 will likely come with an iOS 7 replacement, but if Apple plans to make this the foundation of iOS for years to come, we could see new hardware designs incorporate parts of iOS 7 like the hidden gestures.

This is the first iPhone 6 concept to arrive with the revamped iOS 7 on board and like many iPhone 6 concepts we get a look at a new display, new home button and various other improvements.

Some of these improvements come from talk of an iPhone 6 prototype while others clearly draw inspiration from the iOS 7 beta that is in the hands of developers and will arrive this fall.

From a design standpoint this concept ditches the glass portions on the back of the iPhone 5, but retains the overall look of the device. This new look is especially sharp on the white iPhone 6.

Apple rumors point to a new home button experience on the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6, and this iPhone 6 concept ditches the physical home button in favor of a touchpad-like experience. This iPhone 6 home button lets users tap on left and right buttons which the creator claims will offer more control.

The iPhone 6 concept also include a fingerprint sensor built-in to the Apple logo at the bottom of the device, which secures information and accompanies a new Passbook app. Apple purchased AuthenTec in 2012, a mobile security firm with experience in embedding fingerprint reading technology in mobile devices, leading many to assume that Apple will add this to the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6.

While iOS 7 will arrive this fall, it will likely come on an iPhone 5S, rather than an iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 is reportedly due in 2014, according to several analysts citing supply chain sources. The iPhone 6 is likely to be the next iPhone with a new design, and could be the next iPhone Apple launches with a larger display.

PS4 vs PS3

Later this year Sony will release the PlayStation 4 (PS4), the creatively named successor to the PlayStation 3 (PS3). While the new console will entice many gamers, the PlayStation 3 is still a good choice for gamers who can’t afford to start over with a new generation of consoles.

The PlayStation 4 is the newer console, but its predecessor as a giant library of games to choose from and is cheaper. PlayStation 3 games won’t look as great as PlayStation 4 games, but that doesn’t make them any less fun. Some recent games even come close to matching some of the games Sony and other companies showed off at E3 this year.

PS4 vs. PS3 Head to Head

Price

To put it simply, the PlayStation 3 is cheaper than the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 will retail for $399 when it debuts sometime this holiday season. That price will only include the console and a single DualShock 4 controller.

The PlayStation 3 currently sells for $299 with a number of pack-ins to make the price worth it. Gamestop currently offers two PlayStation 3 bundles that come with two games each. One bundlecomes with God of War: Ascension and God of War Saga (which contains the first four God of War games), and the other includes Infamous 2 and Gran Turismo 5: XL Edition.

Both PS3 bundles also include 60 days of PlayStation Plus which gives gamers access to even more games, and a single controller.

Hardware

The new PlayStation 4 will use a custom AMD Jaguar system-on-chip that’s similar to the Xbox One and gaming PCs. The hardware breaks backwards compatibility, but makes it easier for developers to create games for the platform, especially indie developers.

The PlayStation 3 uses a custom Cell processor that breaks backwards compatibility with the PS2, but can play PS1 games. The processor made it difficult for some developers to program for the PS3 in the early days, but now it’s not a problem.

Both the latest version of the PS3 and the announced version of the PS4 include built-in 500GB hard drives. Those large hard drives mean gamers can store dozens of games on their consoles without going through the trouble of finding games to delete. Gamers can also replace those hard drives with even larger ones should they feel the need to.

Games

A video game console is essentially useless without a large selection of games. At its E3 press conference Sony claimed it will have 140 new games available for the PlayStation 4 within the first year. It didn’t show nearly that many, however. The exclusive PS4 games the company did show included Infamous: Second Son, Drive Club, Knack and Destiny. Third party publishers will also support the console with next-generation exclusives including The Division and NBA Live 14.

After seven years the PlayStation 3 has an impressive lineup of games available. That list includes classics like Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, MLB The Show 13 and Gran Turismo 5. Sony and other publishers will continue to support the PS3 going into 2014. The recently released The Last of Us and upcoming games like Gran Turismo 6 and Beyond: Two Souls are exclusive to Sony’s current console.

Many of the multiplatform games shown off at E3 2013 on the PlayStation 4 will also make their way to the PlayStation 3. Games such as Madden 25, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, FIFA 14 and the fascinating Watch Dogs.

Controller

The PlayStation 4 uses the new DualShock 4 controller that look very similar to the PlayStation 3 controller with a number of enhancements. The sticks on the controller are now concave instead of convex, making it easier to grip them. The triggers are also greatly improved for better performance in shooters. Sony also added a touchpad and a share button to the controller in addition to a few changes to the grip.

Many who held the controller such claim the PS4 controller is a much better controller than the PlayStation 3′s controller. Griffin McElroy of Polygon, for example, “fell in love with [the controller] instantly.” Some even preferred it to the Xbox 360 controller.

The PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 controller is very familiar, and is essentially the same as the controllers for the PS1 and PS2. The only difference is it has motion sensors and its wireless. instead of wired.

Services

Both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 offer essentially the same online services. Both can use PlayStation Plus which will give gamers access to free games for as long as they pay for the service. On the PlayStation 4 that will include Drive Club: PS Plus Edition at launch.

There are only two big differences between the console’s services. The PlayStation 4 will have access to Flixster and the gamers who want to play online with the PS4 have to pay for PlayStation Plus. The aforementioned free games should ease the pain of that requirement, however.

Is This iOS 7 for iPad

While the iOS 7 beta for iPhone has given iPhone users a glimpse at what to expect from the iOS 7 release down the road, the iOS 7 beta for iPad remains unreleased. However, iPad owners looking for an early glimpse at iOS 7 ahead of the iOS 7 beta are in luck today it seems as a new video has emerged, seemingly showing off the unreleased software or something that looks very similar.

Earlier this month, Apple debuted iOS 7 which will be arriving later this year for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The software isn’t expected to arrive until sometime in the fall as Apple, and those in the developer program, work to get rid of the bugs and enhance the software before its final touchdown for the masses.

To do this, Apple has released iOS 7 beta for the iPhone and iPod touch. Developers are able to download the software in an effort to get familiar with the software and report bugs ahead of its Gold Master. Apple hasn’t yet released iOS 7 beta for iPad however saying that it is saving that release for sometime this summer.

The lack of an iOS 7 beta for iPad means that iPad owners have only caught glimpse of what iOS 7 looks like on Apple’s large slate. And while it remains unreleased, a new video has surfaced today, claiming to show off iOS 7 on the iPad.

The video, first discovered by 9to5Mac, is in Russian, but that’s not what will matter to iPad owners. What will matter is that it seems to be showing off what iOS 7 looks like on the iPad. Appearances of course can be deceiving and given that Apple hasn’t released the beta, it’s unclear how the software may have been acquired, if it is in fact the real deal.

Even if it isn’t, it should give iPad owners a good look into what iOS 7 will likely look like when it arrives further down the road.

The video showcases many of the new features that will indeed be coming with iOS 7 when it arrives including the new Control Center which appears to be super sized for the iPad and the new Notification Center that can be accessed from the top of the user interface.

At this point, while it appears to be real or at least based on the real software, its authenticity cannot be verified and thus it should be taken by iPad owners with a grain of salt.

Galaxy S5 Concept Boasts Metal Design (Video)

The Samsung Galaxy S5 may be months away from launch but that hasn’t stopped intrepid designers and Android enthusiasts from dreaming up their own Galaxy S5 concepts. The latest Galaxy S5 concept pairs a metal design, something that has already been rumored, with a 16MP camera, and no home button to speak of.

Several weeks ago, Samsung released the Samsung Galaxy S4 unto the world and the device has gone on to sell millions of units around the world in its short existence. Samsung has also produced several other Galaxy S4 branded devices that it has released or will be releasing in the weeks ahead including the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Zoom and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

Later this year, Samsung will more than likely take the curtain down from around the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, a device that is rumored for September. The company isn’t, however, expected to replace the Galaxy S4 until 2014 when it will likely announce a new Samsung Galaxy S5. And while we are still very far away from the start of 2014 and Galaxy S5 rumors, designers are already coming up with their own take on a new addition to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S series.

Already we’ve seen some Galaxy S5 concepts emerge from the woodwork and today, we’re sharing another one from Bob Freking who has taken suggestions from fans and put them together in the form of a Galaxy S5 concept video.

Freking’s vision of the Galaxy S5 isn’t as outlandish as some of the other Galaxy S5 concepts that we’ve seen. Instead, the device is much more down to earth.

Highlights of his Galaxy S5 concept include a 5-inch 1080p display like the current Galaxy S4 and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the latter of which is unlikely to arrive on the real Galaxy S5. Also included are a fingerprint reader for added security – something that is rumored for the iPhone 5S, a 16MP camera with optical image stabilization – rumored for the Galaxy Note 3, and a next-generation Exynos 5 Octa processor.

This Galaxy S5 concept also comes with a water resistant metal design, replacing Samsung’s usual plastic design, and while conceptual, it’s something that could very well arrive on the Galaxy S5. In fact, rumors have surfaced, indicating that Samsung is at least entertaining the idea.

The device also drops the usual home button in place of on-screen keys and also employs a new version of TouchWiz that is far less aggressive and gimmicky than the current software.

While this is a Galaxy S5 concept, there is no denying that consumers are likely interested in many if not all of these features. And while Samsung will likely not follow this path exactly, some of these features could ultimately end up finding their way on the real Galaxy S5 when it arrives sometime next year.
