Facebook Adds Giant 'Like' Quick Reply to Messenger App
Yo, Facebook. We're really happy for you. We're gonna let you finish, but the Facebook Poke was one of the best user interactions of all time.
Unfortunately, it's the Facebook "Like" that's getting all the love as of late. As first reported byTechCrunch's Josh Constine, Facebook has rolled out a minor new feature for both its Android and iOS Messaging app. Minor in purpose, that is, but one that's pretty hard to miss.
The tweak now introduces a giant thumbs-up icon — a "Like" — that swaps places with your normal "Send" button as needed within the app. Presumably, it's the kind of thing you'd want to tap if you appreciate the contents of what you received, but are otherwise engaged (or, say, driving) and can't offer up a full reply.
Or, as Constine notes, it basically replaces the "k" that many are used to texting as quick response to a friend's message.
Tapping the big thumbs-up does exactly what you'd expect it to — inserting a huge, graphical thumbs-up into your messaging stream. Here are some more Like parameters: So long as the last message in your conversation is a reply from someone else, you can Like it. You aren't bound by any kind of time window for your approval, save for the inherent personal weirdness of sending a friend a giant thumbs-up out of the blue. You, however, cannot initiate a conversation with a Like, nor can you throw a Like into your conversation after you've previously said something.
It gets worse. You can also Like a Like, which could potentially put you and your buddy into the mobile equivalent of a Facebook Poke War. Please resist the urge to do so, lest it too greatly take away from the evolution of communication that humanity has enjoyed over the past many thousands of years.
Likes don't come with any additional signals to warn you that a friend has proclaimed your conversation worthy of graphical merit. Your phone won't vibrate differently, nor will you hear any fancier sounds to inform you that Facebook's equivalent of the Buddy Christ* just hit your conversation. You also don't get to play with anything fancier than a Like — there's no "thumbs down" graphic that you can use as a quick reply to something you don't particularly care for, to give one example.
It's unclear whether Facebook has any plans to roll out additional graphical replies in the future which, sadly, includes the almighty Poke.
Bajaj Auto launches premium KTM 390 Duke at Rs 1.8 lakh
Bajaj Auto today launched its premium bike from the KTM platform at a price of Rs 1.8 lakh and said it expects to clock higher sales from the premium segment.
The KTM 390 Duke is the second offering from the KTM portfolio as Bajaj Auto had launched the first KTM offering, KTM 200 Duke, in January 2012. The Duke is the first mid-size sports bike from the Bajaj stable.
The premium segment accounts for 1,000 units per month and Bajaj commands nearly 75 per cent share in it.
The company expects volumes to grow in double-digits with the launch, vice-president for Probiking, Amit Nandi, said at the launch.
Bajaj reported a 5.32 per cent fall in its motorcycle sales at 3,04,780 units in May against 3,21,922 units in the corresponding month the previous year.
Its exports too declined sharply by 14.35 per cent in the month at 1,11,835 units down from 1,30,573 units.
The company has so far sold 11,000 KTM 200s since its launch, out of which 7,500 units were sold last fiscal, Bajaj Auto managing director Rajeev Bajaj said after the launch.
“The KTM 390 Duke is conceived, designed and developed at the Chakan plant. With the new offering we have created a new segment not only in the domestic market but globally as well. So, there will be no direct competition to this product,” Bajaj claimed.
However, it is expected that the Duke will face competition from Yamaha R15, Honda CBR 250 and Ninja 350.
Bajaj also said as per the plan chalked out with his Australian counterpart KTM, in which Bajaj holds nearly 48 per cent stake, it plans to produce 2 lakh units by 2017 of which one lakh units will be rolled out from the Chakan plant and rest from the Australian facility.
“KTM sold 1.07 lakh bikes last year globally and we plan to roll out 2 lakh bikes by 2017 with half of them coming from the Chakan plant alone,” Bajaj said.
Already, the Duke bikes are being shipped to the US and European markets and will do so soon to Japan as well. Bajaj currently produces Duke 125 and Duke 200 from the Pune facility. However, soon Duke 125 will be meant only for exports, Bajaj said.
“We export around 25,000-30,000 KTM bikes annually from here to the US and European markets,” he said.
The company also plans to roll out one more product from the KTM platform next year but has not decided the timing.
On the overall exports from the company’s stable, Bajaj said they have sold 1,07,000 units globally and plan to increase it to 2,00,000 by 2017. Exports so far touched 30,000 units this fiscal, including 125 Dukes.
How to Download YouTube Videos for Offline Viewing on Your Nexus 7 Tablet
Almost any video you could want is on YouTube for free, including those very high quality 1080p music videos. You just have to put up with a few ads. But what happens if you're going on a trip and won't have any Internet access? How will you enjoy your favorite YouTube vids? For that, you'll need to download your favorite YouTube videos onto your Nexus 7 or other Android device for offline viewing. If you don't want to "watch" the video, you could even just download the audio track as an MP3.
As you can probably tell, Google Play has plenty of apps advertising these capabilities, but none of them work like you want them to. Trust me, I’ve given all of them a try.
These don't work.
But you're in luck, because in this softModder guide, I'll be showing you the real way to download YouTube videos, as well as convert them to MP3s, quick and easily on your Nexus 7 tablet! Let's begin!
Step 1: Enable "Unknown Sources"
For this guide, you'll be downloading an application that's not currently in the Google Play store. As with all third-party apps not available on Google Play, you'll need to make sure Unknown Sources is checked in Settings ->Security on your Nexus 7 in order to download the app.
Step 2: Download & Install YouTube Downloader
Now, we're going to be downloading and installing YouTube Downloader, afree and open source app from Android developer dentex. If you're interesting, you can check out the source code on GitHub or SourceForge.
Click on this link to download the APK file.
None of the apps on the Play Store will let you download YouTube videos because that's against the Terms of Service (TOS). Luckily, this app is not restricted to the Play Store or Google's rules.
Just tap the APK to begin installing.
Step 3: Using YouTube Downloader
There are a few settings to configure in YTDownloader. I recommend checking the following boxes:
- Show preview image
- Show all video sizes
- Enable audio extraction (for converting to MP3s)
- Enable auto-update
Now, using YouTube Downloader is very simple. Launch YouTube, search for a video you want to download, tap the share button (the sideways "V" with three circle), and then tap the button for YouTube Downloader.
Note: VEVO music videos are blocked from download, as well as similar channels. Artists make money from ads. Downloading them would bypass the ads and take money away from the artists.
If you just have to have a music video on your Nexus 7 to watch while you're camping or on the road, a workaround is to just look for a video not uploaded to a VEVO or similar account, and download that one.
It's as easy as that! YouTube Video Downloader will save it in the default "sdcard/Download" folder.
Now you can save videos on to your Nexus 7 effortlessly. Give it a try and tell us if it worked for you!
