I will not die an unlived life

"I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or
catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit."

Stone Soup

Many years ago three soldiers, hungry and weary of battle, came upon a small village. The villagers, suffering a meager harvest and the many years of war, quickly hid what little they had to eat and met the three at the village square, wringing their hands and bemoaning the lack of anything to eat.

The soldiers spoke quietly among themselves and the first soldier then turned to the village elders. "Your tired fields have left you nothing to share, so we will share what little we have: the secret of how to make soup from stones."

Naturally the villagers were intrigued and soon a fire was put to the town's greatest kettle as the soldiers dropped in three smooth stones. "Now this will be a fine soup", said the second soldier; "but a pinch of salt and some parsley would make it wonderful!" Up jumped a villager, crying "What luck! I've just remembered where some's been left!" And off she ran, returning with an apronful of parsley and a turnip. As the kettle boiled on, the memory of the village improved: soon barley, carrots, beef and cream had found their way into the great pot, and a cask of wine was rolled into the square as all sat down to feast.

They ate and danced and sang well into the night, refreshed by the feast and their new-found friends. In the morning the three soldiers awoke to find the entire village standing before them. At their feet lay a satchel of the village's best breads and cheese. "You have given us the greatest of gifts: the secret of how to make soup from stones", said an elder, "and we shall never forget." The third soldier turned to the crowd, and said: "There is no secret, but this is certain: it is only by sharing that we may make a feast". And off the soldiers wandered, down the road.

AMD to fix micro-stutter with Catalyst 13.8 beta driver

Micro-stuttering has always been the bane of a multiple-GPU setups for quite some time. AMD claims to have a fix for this with its new Catalyst 13.8 driver.
Print
In a multi-GPU setup, be it Nvidia or AMD, frames are rendered using a technique called alternate frame rendering (AFR). Instead of multiples GPUs rendering on the same frame, the workload is split evenly so that each GPU gets it own frame. All the frames will then be combined in a buffer and eventually displayed on a screen. AFR is proven to be the most reliable method but it is far from perfect as there are dependencies between frames. Micro-stutter is observable when there are irregular arrival delays between each frame.
Using FRAPS to measure average frame rate is the industry standard to report performance numbers. However micro-stutter can sometimes be so severe such that gaming experience is affected, even when the average frame rate reported is high. Thus, for a multi-GPU setup, be it a single card product like AMD  Radeon 7990 or multiple cards such as 2 AMD Radeon 7970s, the reported average frame rate by FRAPS quickly becomes irrelevant as a performance metric since it does not capture the effect of micro-stutter.
Led by The Tech Report’s Scott Wasson and with the help from Nvidia, FCAT is created to do what FRAPS couldn’t, to accurately measure the effect of micro-stutter.  Using FCAT, a video of a benchmark run is captured with color-coded frame indicating frames from different renderers. The video is then post-processed to extract information such as frame latency and frame time variance. Using FCAT, it is revealed that the multi-GPU setup from AMD fares a lot worse than the multi-GPU setup from Nvidia. As a consequence, AMD needed a fix and here is where Catalyst 13.8 Beta driver comes in.
FramePacing
Along with some regular performance improvements, the Catalyst 13.8 Beta driver is AMD’s first effort to fix micro-stutter issues that have been bugging their multi-GPU products. In the control panel of Catalyst Control Centre under the 3D Application Settings page, users now have the option to turn a feature named Frame Pacing on or off. Turning the feature on is when the micro-stutter fix kicks in.
Being in the beta phase, the fix is far from complete. With that said, only games and applications running DirectX 10 and 11 will be supported at the moment. Directx 9 and OpenGL are not supported in this beta phase but should be coming pretty soon. The fix in this driver also only support a resolution up to 2560 x 1600, meaning Eyefinity is left out of the box. This is the crucial flaw of the driver as many multi-GPU products are built to push multi-monitor resolution of more than 2560 x 1600 pixels.
Although not perfect, AMD’s efforts to admit its flaws and provide a timely fix deserves some attention. There is still a lot of ground to cover and hopefully support for Eyefinity, DirectX 9 and OpenGL will be included in the next release of the driver.

App developer says Google Glass makes him a better driver

The U.K.'s Department for Transport is expected to make driving while wearing Google Glass against the law. Similar to the fine imposed on drivers using a cellphone while operating a car, those wearing the connected specs while behind the wheel could get socked with a fine as high as £90 ($138 USD). Despite this, one Glass developer says that wearing the device has made him a better driver.

Sahas Katta, creator of the GlassTesla app for the Tesla Model S EV, says that by wearing Google Glass while driving, he no longer is distracted by reaching for his cellphone. And when it comes to navigation, Katta says that nothing beats the AR specs. "With navigation, it’s the best technology I’ve used to date – there’s no in-car, mounted or smartphone navigation system that can beat the experience of having Glass so far," says the developer. He notes that with navigation, Glass will remind you to make a turn that's a mile away and then shuts down before reminding you again a tenth of a mile from the turn. Distractions are minimal.

"Google Glass is at a stage where it’s still somewhat your responsibility. If you’re trying to load up some web pages while driving, that’s probably not a great idea, but it’s still possible. But with navigation, it’s the best technology I’ve used to date – there’s no in-car, mounted or smartphone navigation system that can beat the experience of having Glass so far."-Sahas Katta, Google Glass developer

Katta also repeated a rumor he heard that the device has an eye-tracking sensor that has yet to be used. His theory is that in the future, Google Glass will determine if you've fallen asleep while behind the wheel and wake you up. And Google Glass could also monitor how long you stare at its screen and turn off the device to force your attention back on the road if it determines you're staring at the Glass screen for too long.

A couple of states in the U.S. are considering banning Google Glass for drivers although there are no plans right this second for any action to be taken by the federal government. Certainly the U.S. Department of Transportation has been monitoring the situation. With more widespread distribution of the device expected before the end of the year, any bans or other restrictions probably won't be put into place until next year when Google Glass use becomes more widespread.

Survey: 95% of iOS developers will update their apps to work on iOS 7

A survey conducted of 575 iOS developers reveals that 95% of them will update their current apps to run on iOS 7. The survey was conducted by Craig Hockenberry who developed Twitterrific and if his experience speaks for most developers, you can understand why such a large majority will be updating their work. He called the current version of his app as "feeling old and clunky," but changed his characterization of the app to "stunning" after revising the UI of the app to reflect the changes coming to iOS 7.

Jony Ive's redesigned iOS 7 removes the bright glossy colors with aflatter pastel look. And the skeumorphic icons favored by Scott Forstall and the late Steve Jobs are gone.

While 95% of developers surveyed are going to offer an updated iOS 7 version of their apps, 52% of the same group say that they will update their app so that that it works only on iOS 7. That might end up with some iPhone owners making a tough decision if they don't like iOS 7, but an app that they use often requires it. The problem is that "the depth and breadth of the changes in iOS 7 makes it difficult to support older versions of the OS," according to Hockenberry. On the other hand, if a particular app only runs on iOS 7, those with an older iOS device might have to start to consider upgrading to a new version of the device.

"If you’re someone who has a device that’s a couple of years old, now’s the time to start thinking about upgrading. Many apps will require a device capable of running iOS 7."-Craig Hockenberry, iOS developer

With 94% of iOS users currently running iOS 6, a similarly quick and successful result for iOS 7 is expected. The newest build of Apple's mobile OS will give developers the chance to use AirDrop for wireless content sharing, support for apps using low energy Bluetooth, high frame rate video capture, Inter-App Audio for streaming audio between music apps, and a new Map Kit for navigation. The iOS 7 update will come pre-installed on new iterations of Apple's iOS devices and can be updated on devices as far back as 2010'sApple iPhone 4 and the following year's Apple iPad 2.

HTC’s 5.9-inch One Max phablet makes first live appearance

Purported photos of the HTC One Max have leaked, showing off what looks like a rather large version of the HTC One, complete with a unibody design and dual frontal speakers.
HTC-One-Max-1
What do you get when you make the screen on a stunning smartphone like the HTC One larger? Well, you get a larger HTC One that looks just as great – the 5.9-inch HTC One Max, which has been rumored to be the Taiwanese manufacturer’s debut in the phablet market, has made its first live appearance in a couple of leaked photos.
You can see there’s not a single change in the design here, except for a screen that’s considerably larger than both the HTC One and the One mini, though it seems HTC has taken the cheap plastic rim from the latter and put it on the One Max as well. That will probably help in keeping the price down, but won’t be taken too kindly by anyone looking for a premium-feeling device similar to the company’s flagship.
HTC-One-Max-2
Specs of the One Max have been rumored to include a 1080p display, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor with four Krait 400 cores, 2GB of RAM, 4-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), 16GB of expandable storage, and a 3,300mAh battery. Android 4.3 is supposed to be powering the software along with version 5.5 of the Sense UI, and stylus support is expected to be included, too (actually, it has to, or HTC will have zero chance of selling this thing over the Galaxy Note III and Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra).
The source of the leaked pics says the HTC One Max is undergoing testing in China, with an official appearance rumored for next month at IFA. That’s also when the Sony Xperia Honami and the Galaxy Note III are expected to be unveiled, so it looks like we’re in for a rather exciting September.

Awesome new GTA 5 multiplayer features

ROBB

Awesome new GTA 5 multiplayer features?

But now that we think about it, with every Rockstar game we’ve played it’s exceeded our exceeded expectations of the game.
If what they say is true, what could it possibly be?
Well, it can’t be just more game types.
For the most part, we can’t really imagine what they could or would do to make it so great. Like what we said before we think it’s mainly just talk.
We do think that the multiplayer will be great after all, but we can’t imagine it being that great. Hey, if we are proven wrong, that would be awesome.
But we guess all of us just have to wait and see.
If it really is that awesome though, it might explain some of the development time.
Like, the goal being to make full use of the game world of GTA V in ways that the single-player campaign alone could not, and perhaps to blend things together more seamlessly.
But again, it’s hard to say what would actually go into that, especially given the limitations imposed by the hardware (you can’t exactly make it an MMO).
UPDATE: Some information we’ve taken from the internet:
Multiplayer will be more like single-player.
Activities will be all open, and also there will be missions like in single-player, although they will be their own unique story heists set up for people to team up and take down.
Some missions, players will be split up and each person has their different roles to play in the set-up, when certain missions go down, you will be competing with other crews who are working on their own agenda.
Also some players will be able to choose to play as cops like in GTA IV, and they have to stop the heists and gang wars and various missions from happening.
You will also have your own gang-hideouts, which other players will try to take over whenever they want, and you will have to defend them, a bit like turf wars.
Other modes like ‘Mafiya Wars’ will also be fully integrated in to the free roam, where players can choose to compete or just not bother.. there will be ‘Land Grab’ and ‘Most Wanted’ type features similar to Red Dead Redemption but expanded.

Facebook pays bug hunters $1 million

Social networking giantFacebook said it has paid over USD 1 million in the past two years to security researchers who report bugs on its website, with India second among recipients by country.

India, which has over 78 million Facebook users, is also second on the list of countries with the fastest-growing number of recipients of its Bug Bounty programme.

A bug is an error or defect in software or hardware that causes a programme to malfunction. It often occurs due to conflicts in software when applications try to run in tandem.

While bugs can cause software to crash or produce unexpected results, certain defects can be used to gain unauthorised access to systems.

Facebook said it started the Bug Bounty programme a little more than two years ago to reward security researchers who report issues and to encourage people to help keep the site safe and secure.

"The programme has been even more successful than we'd anticipated," Facebook said in a statement on its website. "We've paid out more than USD 1 million in bounties and have collaborated with researchers from all around the world to stamp out bugs in our products and in our infrastructure."

The social networking major said 329 people have received rewards, including professional researchers, students and part-timers. The youngest recipient was 13 years old.

"The countries with the most bounty recipients are, in order, the US, India, UK, Turkey, and Germany. The countries with the fastest-growing number of recipients are, in order, the US, India, Turkey, Israel, Canada, Germany, Pakistan, Egypt, Brazil, Sweden, and Russia," it noted.

While the bug hunters are spread across 51 countries, 20 per cent of the bounty paid so far have gone to US-based recipients, it added.

"Our Bug Bounty program allows us to harness the talent and perspective of people from all kinds of backgrounds, from all around the world," Facebook Security Engineer Collin Greene said.

Two of the bounty recipients have taken up full-time jobs with the Facebook security team, he added.

Twitter adds "report" button to Android app in the U.K

Twitter adds
Lately, we've seen Twitter turn into a powder keg just waiting to explode in the U.K. and in Europe. Bomb threats have been made against the House of Parliament while other violent threats were made against European authors and journalists. As a social network, Twitter is bound to be a place where opinions are broadcast, some that you will agree with and others that you think are just plain wrong.

After listening to complaints from Twitter users in the region, a change was made to the desktop version of Twitter as well as the Android app in the area. Similar to what is already available on the iOS and mobile versions of the Twitter app, a "report" button has been added to the Android version of the app in the U.K. This new button will probably not be seen in the U.S. as the addition of it was basically in response to a regional matter. A freelance journalist in the area named Caroline Criado-Perez sought to have images of women shown on British Pound banknotes. Criado-Perez received tweets with rape threats and threats of other forms of violence, leading to the decision to start a petition which asked Twitter to include a button with tweets that users can click on to report a threatening message.

"Over the past week, we've been listening to your feedback on how we can improve our service. You told us that we need to make our rules clearer, simplify our abuse reporting process, and promote the responsible use of Twitter."-Del Harvey, Senior Director, Twitter, and Tony Wang, U.K. General Manager, Twitter.

The button added by Twitter allows subscribers to quickly "flag" an abusive message straight from the tweet itself instead of filling out numerous pages of a complicated and long form. That was the old way to report an abusive Twitter post in the U.K. The button should start appearing as soon as next month. Besides the "report" button, Twitter has also updated the definition of "abuse" on the site. In a new "Targeted Abuse" section within the "Abuse and Spam" category, Twitter denounces attacks on individuals from multiple accounts or using a Twitter account to threaten and attack a particular person.

Test Driving the MyFord Mobile App

Owners of Ford plug-in electric or gas-electric vehicle have access to a mobile phone app called MyFord Mobile. It allows the user to keep tabs on their Ford Focus Electric, Ford Fusion Energi or Ford C-Max Energi. Utilizing an always-on data connection in the vehicle the vehicle transmits important information to the phone, and the phone can also send information back to the vehicle. While there is a small delay in sending a command to the vehicle over a cellular network, it does provide some useful features that cost extra in other manufacturer’s vehicles.
Once configured, the app will show the user an image of the vehicle and the amount of charge left on the battery when logged in. Also, the app shows the fuel tank capacity. This provides an at-a-glance look at what the car is doing and if it is ready to go.
MyFord Mobile App
From the main screen, MyFord Mobile shows charge information and fuel remaining.
The blue car indicates where the vehicle is currently located. The days of forgetting where the vehicle is parked are over with this app. The green bubbles indicate nearby charging stations. While the C-Max Energi and Fusion Energi both can run on gasoline, the Focus Electric cannot. This portion of the app makes it easy to see where the nearest charging station is and if there is enough juice to make it to it.
MyFord Mobile App
The app features a vehicle locator, as well as a map of all nearby electric vehicle charging stations.
The MyFord Mobile application also functions as a key fob that can work anywhere on the planet. The vehicle can be remotely started, or the doors can be locked or unlocked remotely. This would be useful if the driver is out of normal key fob range but wants to make sure the vehicle is locked. Another practical use would be starting a car parked in long-term parking at the airport from within the confines of the terminal.
MyFord Mobile
The MyFord Mobile app also functions as a key fob, allowing the user to lock and unlock the car, as well as start it remotely.
The MyFord Mobile app also provides additional functionality. All of those features are accessed from the triangle menu option.
MyFord Mobile
The MyFord Mobile app also provides additional functionality.
The MyFord Mobile application can provide vehicle health information. This information can include the health of the electric vehicle battery system as well as tire pressure. Also, the app provides anytime access to the owner’s manual.
MyFord Mobile
MyFord Mobile provides vehicle health information.
The MyFord Mobile app also allows the driver to set customizable GO Times. A GO Time tells the vehicle that the driver plans on leaving at a certain date and time, and that that driver would like the temperature in the cabin to be at a certain temperature. Before the scheduled time, the vehicle will adjust the temperature in the cabin to the predefined amount utilizing the power from the power grid. This saves the vehicle from having to make those changes running on battery alone.
MyFord Mobile
The MyFord Mobile app can configure “Go Times” to prepare the car’s thermostat while still plugged into the grid.
Interested in seeing how the vehicle is performing? The MyFord Mobile app provides statistical information, such as charge time and trip computer data, from within the app.
MyFord Mobile
The MyFord Mobile app also provides statistics.
For those that buy a plug-in hybrid to feel good about helping the environment, the MyFord Mobile app will also show how efficient the driver of the vehicle has been. Not only will it score the driver, but it will also show how much fuel and nasty emissions were saved by driving one.
MyFord Mobile app
The MyFord Mobile app will also score the driver’s green driving.
For some, they may not care about the additional features of the MyFord Mobile app, but providing remote starting capabilities is something everyone would probably enjoy. And for the those who enjoy the “gamification” of their drive, this app provides a great deal of information that can even be shared with friends.

How to Arrange App Icons on the Samsung Galaxy S4

Better app icon organization makes smart phone users more productive, so we’ll show users how to arrange app icons on the Samsung Galaxy S4 home screen, dock and app draw.
The stock Samsung Galaxy S4 home screen doesn’t help very many people use their phone efficiently. That’s why we suggest rearranging the app icons, putting the most used icons on the phone’s dock and collecting categories of apps into folders. Also, some users may want to add new screens or remove unneeded screens, also called pages. This makes finding often used and even less used apps easier and faster.

Moving Apps

To move an app the user must master one skill needed throughout this process. Tap on an app icon and hold until it becomes movable. See the screen shot below. Then, without lifting the finger, slide the app icon, folder icon or widget to a new spot on the screen.
remove app icons on galaxy s4
Tap and hold the app icon till the screen looks like this and then drag icon to the trash can.

Remove Unneeded Apps

Let’s start by getting rid of unwanted apps or widgets. To remove an app icon or widget, tap and hold untill the above screen appears and either move it to the Remove icon trashcan, or the Create folder icon. The remove will not uninstall the app. It just gets it off the home screen. The Create folder icon makes a new folder with the app inside.

Creating Folders of Apps

When making a new folder using the above method, give the folder a name. The image below appears. Type a name like Entertainment, Games or Browsers.
create folders on gs4
We can also create folders by moving icons from the app drawer to the home screen. Open the app drawer, the icon labelled Apps that looks like a grid of grey boxes. Tap and hold an icon till the first screen above shows up. Then drag it over another icon. This creates a folder with the two icons in it. Now repeat with all the icons wanted in the folder giving descriptive names to each. Name folders by tapping them and then tap on the title area above the icons.
The phone lets users add new folders from the phone’s menu button at the bottom of the phone left of the physical home button. Tap it and a menu pops up that includes an item for creating a new folder. There’s also an item for adding apps and widgets to the home screen and for working with pages (see more below).
gs4 home screen menu
Use the “tap and hold” method to move apps to the dock. The app must sit on the home screen, so move it there from the app drawer first if not already present on the home page. When moving an app to the dock, if there’s already an app in that slot, it will jump out and take the place where the moved app used to sit on the home page.

Working with Pages

Pages represent the screens of apps, widgets or folders. Slide from side to side to move from page to page. At the bottom of the home screen notice the tiny icons between the icons and the dock. Each tiny square represents a page with the main page represented by a Home icon. Tap them to move quickly to that page. By default the Galaxy S4 gives users five pages.
create folders on gs4
Quickly add a blank Page by tapping and holding on the home screen. A menu pops up listing possible actions (see above). The last one lets the user add a blank page to the home screen.
When a user taps and holds on an icon or folder, the screen that appears includes a thumbnail of all the pages on the phone. Drag icons to these thumbnails to quickly add them to that page. One of the thumbnails includes a plus sign. This creates a new page with that icon or folder.
gs4 page thumbs
Another way to change pages comes in the Settings menu that pops up when a user taps the menu button at the bottom of the phone next to the physical home button. Tap Edit page and the screen shows a thumbnail of all the pages. Tap and drag a page to the Remove button to delete it. Tap and hold a page to make it the new home page that shows when the home button is pressed. Tap the one with the plus sign to add a new page.

Creating Folders in the App Drawer

Users can arrange apps the way they wish in the app drawer too. Open it by tapping the app drawer icon, labelled Apps. Then hit the menu button as described above. A list of actions appears including Create folder.
