Samsung has announced the Exynos 5 Octa 5420, a chipset with eight cores that purportedly offers a 20% increase in CPU performance and more than double the GPU performance over the Exynos 5410 used in the Galaxy S4.
After taking to Twitter last week to tease an improved version of the octa-core Exynos chipset powering the Galaxy S4, Samsung has officially announced the Exynos 5420 via a press release. This new SoC has the same big.LITTLE arrangement as the 5410, sporting four ARM Cortex-A15 cores running at 1.8GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores at 1.3GHz (one set of cores is active at any time)
The Exynos 5420 also packs dual-channel LPDDR3 memory clocked at 933MHz that gives it a theoretical memory bandwidth of 14.9 GB/s, which will allow for ”industry-leading fast data processing” and full HD Wi-Fi display support. An image compression system reduces the power required to load pictures and other media, and offers longer battery life on high-resolution displays, particularly in functions like web browsing and multimedia consumption.
But the most interesting aspect of this new chip is the GPU. Samsung has switched from a PowerVR SGX544MP3, to a Mali-T628 MP6 (six-core) GPU, which is advertised to be almost double the graphical performance over the former. It fully supports OpenGL ES 3.0 and Full Profile Open CL 1.1, and also allows for GPU computing to accelerate complex operations usually handled by application processors. This increased GPU power should be a boon for gamers, as the chipset should be able to handle HD games at basically any display resolution (provided developers take the pain to optimize their content for the 5420).
The Exynos 5 Octa 5420 is set to go into mass production in August, and while Samsung didn’t mention which products would be using the new SoC, we can expect to see it power the upcoming Galaxy Note III, or at least the successor to the Galaxy S4 next year.
