What’s inside the $35 Chromecast

You can get 7 McDonald’s Happy Meal for about 35 bucks and you’ll know exactly what you’ll be getting once you open the box.  For roughly that same amount, you can also grab a Chromecast TV stick, but chances are it is unlikely that you’ll want to pry the TV stick open and see what you’re paying for.

If and when you receive your Chromecast and have the urge to open more than just the packaging, don’t, because these are the things that are inside:
  • Marvell DE3005-A1 SoC
  • 4GB flash storage
  • 512MB DDR3 RAM
  • AzureWave 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and FM receiver
  • HDMI connector
  • microUSB power port
  • Aluminum heatsink
What can you do with all these goodies?  Well, not much, except pop the plastic shell back on and reattach it to your display.  Eventually, there will be some sort of useful OS ports for Google’s latest TV dongle, but for now it’ll just be an essentially UI-less browser that you can interact with via your smart devices.
