Superman and video games have a somewhat tenuous relationship. After Superman 64 became one of the biggest stinkers in console gaming history (so... many... rings...) it put a black mark on the last son of Krypton, and the subsequent games have never managed to escape its infamous shadow. The licensed game for the upcoming reboot Man Of Steel is trying to set a new standard for Superman games... and doesn't stand a Kryptonian's chance in Apokolips of actually achieving it. The game will have a simultaneous release with the movie on June 14th.
Man Of Steel takes the beat-em-up route seen with other licensed titles like The Avengers,Stargate, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and even Batman (who has some fantastic console games that the developers didn't even try to emulate). In the Android and iOS game you'll follow the rough plot of the Zack Snyder movie, tracing Superman's over-told story from Smallville through vagrancy and eventually to Metropolis, beating up many, many bad guys before getting to General Zod and his henchmen.
While very little information about the gameplay has been released from developer Phosphor (who made the admittedly impressive Horn), aside form the fact that there are combos. It looks like a rather standard Infinity Blade-style "reaction fighter," wherein you tap and swipe to fight and dodge with a static character. Despite the fact that the video above is clearly using iPad hardware, the graphics still look pretty lackluster, and probably aren't going to get any better on Android. A survival mode and a collection of different outfits (none of which feature red underwear) add in some extra content. Maybe it's too much to ask for innovation from a property that's 75 years old. At least it's not an endless runner.
Man Of Steel will be released to the Google Play Store and the Amazon Appstore on June 14th for $4.99. Hey, at least it's not coming months after the iOS version.
