Evernote has received another significant update on iOS and Android, bringing a number of new platform-specific features that active users will love and new ones will appreciate.
The Android app now integrates with OfficeSuite, allowing users to edit any Word documents attached to a note. This is a premium feature, but users can try it for a week if desired. The integration puts Android’s open nature to good use, and works with one of the platform’s best apps for Office editing.
Both apps gain Skitch support, which lets users annotate and append notes to photos taken from within and without the app. PDF support for Skitch is also on board. This is an interesting move for Evernote, as the company has been pushing Skitch independently of its native Evernote app, too.
Android users can also benefit from an improved Evernote widget with three new formats: lock screen, list view and quick reminder. The former is only compatible with Android 4.2 and up, and the latter Honeycomb and newer.
iOS users get some smaller goodies, too. There is a new Shortcuts feature, which lets users bookmark specific notes and have quick access to them with a rising tab at the bottom of the homescreen. This comes in handy when collaborating or continually working with a particular file, and works by “starring” a note.
Related notes are also available to iOS users, but this comes at the cost of an annual subscription, much like a growing number of Evernote features. The company has been pushing its $45/year Premium access quite hard in recent months as it aims to increase revenue in lieu of an IPO later this year or early next year. While the cost of a premium account may seem high, there is an ever-increasing number of value-added features, across all Evernote products, that makes it enticing. For example, users of Evernote Hello can use their iPhone’s camera to record a business card and have the information automatically parsed into a contact entry.
