Apple Inc. has acquired US-based wireless chip maker Passif Semiconductor Corp. for undisclosed sum. Founded in 2007, Passif manufactures switch-based wireless transceivers with low power consumption and a small footprint. .
Confirming the deal, Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette told AllThingsD, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
"Passif's expertise lies in low-power communication chips with very small footprints, something Apple could presumably bring to bear on future iPhones and iPads—or as-of-yet unannounced wearable devices like, say, a watch or band," reported AllThingsD.
Passif's low-power chips could be used in other Apple products, improving battery life across the board
