Top four anti-surveillance apps

1. Text Secure (play.google.com)

text secure nsa
TextSecure encrypts your text messages over the air and on your phone. It's almost identical to the normal text messaging application, and is just as easy to use.
TextSecure provides a secure and private replacement for the default text messaging app. All messages are encrypted locally, so if your phone is lost or stolen, your messages will be safe.
Messages to other TextSecure users are encrypted over the air, protecting your communication in transit. TextSecure is the only Android private SMS/MMS messenger replacement that uses open source peer-reviewed cryptographic protocols to keep your messages safe.
Rather than simply pretending to hide your texts by putting them in another place, TextSecure uses cryptography to ensure that they remain truly secure.

2. Red Phone (play.google.com)

red phone
RedPhone provides end-to-end encryption for your calls, securing your conversations so that nobody can listen in.
RedPhone uses your normal phone number to make and receive calls, so you don't need yet another identifier. Use the default system dialer and contacts apps to make calls as you normally would.
RedPhone will give you the opportunity to upgrade to encrypted calls whenever the person you're calling also has RedPhone installed.
RedPhone calls are encrypted end-to-end, but function just like you're used to. Uses wifi or data, not your plan's voice minutes.
Second place must-haves: Tor apps Onion Browser (Apple iOS) and Orbot (Android), or running your own VPN.
Both Onion Browser and Orbot make use of the Tor Project, but they each function slightly differently (with privacy protection limitations falling on the Apple side of the tree due to the closed nature of iOS).

3. Onion Browser (Apple iTunes)

onion
Onion Browser is a minimal web browser that encrypts and tunnels web traffic through the Tor onion router network and provides other tools to help browse the internet while maintaining privacy.
Websites do not see your real IP address. Your connection is encrypted before it leaves your device, providing protection against snooping by ISPs or people who share a WiFi connection with you.
Tunnel bypasses restrictive firewalls: you can access the entire Internet from behind ISPs or corporate connections, or when inside countries that practice online censorship. Access websites on the "dark net" of anonymous .onion web sites, only accessible in the Tor network.
User-Agent spoofing: hides the fact that you are using an iPhone/iPad from websites you visit. Ability to block third party cookies or all cookies. Can change IP address and clear cookies/history/cache in one button.
CHINA/IRAN NOTE: Due to online censorship techniques using deep-packet inspection (DPI), this app does NOT currently function in China or Iran.

4. Orbot (play.google.com)

orbot
Orbot is a "proxy app that empowers other apps to use the internet more securely. It uses Tor to encrypt Internet traffic and hide it by basically bouncing through a series of computers around the world; it is the official version of the Tor onion routing service for Android.
(...) instead of connecting you directly like VPNs and proxies. This process takes a little longer, but the strongest privacy and identity protection available is worth the wait.
Use with Orweb, the most anonymous way to access any website, even if it’s normally blocked, monitored, or on the hidden web. UseGibberbot with Orbot to chat confidentially with anyone, anywhere for free.
Orbot can be configured to transparently proxy all of your Internet traffic through Tor. You can also choose which specific apps you want to use through Tor.
Any installed app can use Tor if it has a proxy feature, using the settings found here. Check out our fun, interactive walkthrough.

Airmail for Mac

Airmail for Mac
If you’re a power user when it comes to email on the Mac, you probably have the Sparrow mail app. Unfortunately ever since Sparrow was acquired by Google last year, it’s become a dying app, with it last being updated all the way back in October 2012. But there is now an even better and more powerful mail app available for the Mac and it’s dirt cheap – Airmail.
Airmail is a super powerful and very well designed mail app made specially for Mac. It has nearly every feature you could think of when it comes to mail apps – and what if it doesn’t have a feature you’re looking for, you can request it of course. They have a dedicatedfeedback site that has been made to make the app the best it can be.
There is a whole bunch of features that you’re better off going over to the Airmail site to read all about them. But here are my favourite features:
  • Dropbox support for attachments
  • Notifications per account so you can set notifications for the most important accounts
  • Very neat conversation style view
  • Multiple theme tweaks to help you find a style which suits you
  • Contact support with Gmail accounts
  • Folders and labels sync
The best thing about this app is that it’s only £1.49 which is very cheap when it comes to Mac apps. This is the must have mail app on the Mac. I myself have switched to it from Sparrow and don’t miss anything.

Hackers Take Control of Vehicle Door Locks Remotely

Car hardware are coming to be truly progressed. In the past, every electrical segment of a vehicle might work autonomously of the different frameworks. In present day vehicles, makers use Can transport (Controller Area Network) to permit every machine segment to have the ability to converse with one another. This innovation takes into consideration state-of-the craft infotainment frameworks, radar voyage control frameworks and other information driven employments. Like numerous mechanized systems, the car has turned into a schmuck of a hacking plan that has law requirement baffled.

Keyless Entry Hack
It creates the impression that the hackers who are breaking into autos (however not really taking the autos) are strolling up to the traveler side entryway of vehicles furnished with an up to date keyless entrance framework and picking up access. Police have dead set from the observation footage that the hacker is holding a gadget in his or her hand which, when initiated, opens the traveler entryway. Through this procedure, the mechanism additionally evidently debilitates any against burglary caution in the vehicle.

As per Today News, the hoodlums are not efficacious with each sort of vehicle. It appears that Ford vehicles are not powerless to the assault, however Honda vehicles are. Additionally, it seems to just be successful on the traveler side of the vehicle.

Security researcher Steve Gibson speculates that the device is emitting some sort of magnetic or electronic interference that causes the on-board computer to treat it like an unlock request. He does not believe that it was an actual decryption of the CAN bus system. Also, keyless entry systems utilize a random “rolling code” that makes stealing an unlock code and reusing it next to impossible.
Until an individual is caught with one of the hacking devices, or a security researcher gains access to one, we will probably not know how the hackers are gaining access. There is a lesson to be learned from this, and it is common sense. Do not leave valuables inside the vehicle that would tempt people to break in and steal it.

Google files for patent to unlock your phone using a funny face

Google files for patent to unlock your phone using a funny faceIndexed in June of a year ago, Google's facial distinguishment programming could be arranged to permit clients to make a predefined facial motion to open the mechanism.

Restricted it could work might be where the mechanism solicits an alternate motion every time, it could be a wink, moving the eyebrows or "tongue distension" (why don't they just get it "standing out your tongue?").

Facial distinguishment is not new, Google presented it as a characteristic with the new form of Android when the Samsung Galaxy Nexus made its make a big appearance. In short request, it was discovered that a picture could crush the distinguishment programming however. Google's alter to present a "liveness check" where the client was instructed to eye flicker before it might read the face was additionally demonstrated to be effectively hoodwinked utilizing just simple aptitudes.

The new patent is even now pending, however the thought behind moving face motions is that they are seemingly more demanding to double. We can see that position, yet cheerfully it might not be confined to just minor facial statements. The more whacky the face, the harder to double, isn't that so?

"Boundless Informant" software could show how much metadata NSA's PRISM collects

After a couple intense days of speculation and troubling reports about what could be contained in the set of data the NSA's PRISM program has gathered, we're getting some actual information on it. Glenn Greenwald from The Guardian, who had first exposed the Verizon call logging side of this, has gotten a look at "Boundless Informant" which is software that details the data collection a bit more.

"Boundless Informant" software could show how much metadata NSA's PRISM collects
According to Greenwald, the data collected is once again focused on metadata (just like the logs collected from Verizon), and PRISM doesn't include the contents of emails, instant messages, or phone calls, but some documents show that IP addresses can be attached to the data. An NSA spokesman told Greenwald that "current technology simply does not permit us to positively identify all of the persons or locations associated with a given communication."

Boundless Informant is used to organize the data, and where it originates. The software shows that 3 billion pieces of information were tracked in the US over a 30-day period ending in March. During that same time, 97 billion pieces of information were collected worldwide, and the most heavily surveilled regions were Iran, Pakistan, Jordan, Egypt, and India. The heat map to the right shows how much various regions around the world are surveilled, with the range going from green to red.

As you can see, America is a mid-range yellow. Of course, the government has insisted that Americans have not been targeted, although incidental information could have been gathered if an American was somehow connected to a targeted individual.

Fruit Ninja Free Gets Massive Update With Local Tablet Multiplayer, New Blades, New Backgrounds, And Yes, More Fruit

It's been quite a while since the Android version of HalfBrick's food murder simulator Fruit Ninja got a content update, but the dry spell ends today. The latest additions to the free app (and only the free app) include better support for Android tablets and a basket full of extra goodies. The most important bit is certainly the introduction of a local, single-device multiplayer mode, though you'll need a 7" or larger tablet to take advantage of it. Players slice fruit at the opposite ends of the screen to compete for a high score.
    2013-06-08 15.01.46
Other new content includes eight more blades (including a calligraphy brush and rainbow sword) and seven new backgrounds. More interesting for dedicated players is the pomegranate, which can clear other adjacent fruit and bombs when sliced multiple times. There are new power-ups and special moves as well: bomb deflection, a highly unstable berry, and peaches which add extra time to your round. All these can be had by earning Starfruit in-game or buying it via an in-app purchase.
    2013-06-08 14.54.02 2013-06-08 14.57.59 2013-06-08 14.58.45
Interestingly, only the free ad-supported version of Fruit Ninja is getting the update, at least at the moment. The paid version and Fruit Ninja THD have not been updated (the latter hasn't been touched since 2011). Also note that the update doesn't include support for any Google Games features - you'll still have to stick with the Beintoo platform if you crave some social gaming.

Plane Finder 3D Lets You See Planes In The Air In Real Time

If you crane your neck skyward, you may see the contrail of a jet or two. Should you want a more up close and personal look, Plane Finder 3D has just taxied up to the Google Play gate. This app tracks flights in real time over a number of cities.
    1 2 3
    5 6 (2)
The feature set is a bit light right now, but there is some real potential here. There are over two-dozen cities tracked in Plane Finder 3D, each with satellite imagery ground maps. You can pan around and zoom in on any plane, then tap to get the flight number, airline, and go into first-person mode. Here's the full list of features:
    • Stunning real time data
    • Powerful 3D engine and simple controls
    • Beautiful terrain and sky detail
    • Smooth contrails
    • Flight numbers and flight routes
    • Airline logos and callsigns
    • Sharing – via Twitter (Cool for holiday photos!!)
    7 76
Plane Finder 3D works by tapping into the ADS-B signals used by aircraft to relay their location to ground stations. This is a new technology, so not all planes have ADS-B systems yet. The app is fun to play around with, but it still needs more features to find mass appeal. Plane buffs take note, though.

Tiara journey booster HTC Windows Phone 8

UPDATE: Just FCC exposure HTC Tiara real soon after appeared between networks HTC Tiara renderings, from the appearance point of view HTC Tiara changed HTC 8X and 8S slim design, the same design ideas past HTC phones are close , completely subvert the HTC 8X Since the launch of HTC Windows Phone 8 devices on the design concept.
Before fayan , the foreign media UnwiredView leaked codenamed HTC Tiara 's new Windows Phone 8 devices. Although in the past few months since we did not hear the phone message, but now according to reports Engadget HTC Tiara has passed FCC certification, and which equipment will provide Sprint custom equipment.
Earlier this year, it said outgoing Sprint and HTC will cooperate in the summer to launch Windows Phone 8 devices. Sprint so far only Windows Phone 7.X equipment, did not launch Windows Phone 8 devices, while HTC Tiara will most likely be in Sprint's first Windows Phone 8 platform devices. According to FCC certification, HTC Tiara support CDMA and LTE Band 25 network, which is a very special network band, only Sprint in the United States use. But unfortunately from the FCC certification which we did not find too many other content.
Earlier rumors, HTC Tiara will be equipped with 4.3 inches WVGA resolution Super LCD2 touch screen (217ppi), 1.2GHz Snapdragon CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, 800 million rear camera, front camera and 1.6 million 1800mAH battery.
From the specification point of view, Tiara should be a midrange device, like HTC is currently in the Android camp HTC SV. HTC SV and HTC Tiara have adopted the same 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, 4.3-inch Super LCD2, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of ROM, and the only difference between the two configurations is that the two devices are different uses of the camera , HTC Tiara with a 800-megapixel rear camera, while the HTC SV with a 500-megapixel rear camera. From these it seems HTC Tiara positioning should work with HTC SV similar functional specifications should be ranged between HTC 8X and HTC 8S.

    ChargeCard for Micro USB Review

IMAG0005ChargeCard is the brainchild of California-based Noah Dentzel and Adam Miller, a product that attempts to fine a balance between the versatility of a regular USB charger and the portability of something that fits in your wallet.
Funded on Kickstarter, the ChargeCard project raised more than three times its $50,000 goal, catching the dual wave of Kickstarter and simple smartphone accessories. At its core, ChargeCard is a simple Micro USB charger in the shape of a business or credit card. One side has a non-removable micro plug and in the middle, held relatively tightly with clips, is a tractable USB 2.0 plug.
IMAG0004When ChargeCard is stowed away, it fits easily into a wallet or bag. It may not be the first charging cable you turn to, but it’s fantastic for use in a pinch when you’re near a computer or a USB-based charging outlet.
Made of a hard, slightly flexible ABS plastic, there’s little chance the thing will snap in half. The USB arm employs a “flexible thermoplastic elastomer,” and stows easily back into place while not in use.
At $25, ChargeCard is a lot more expensive than a replacement USB cable, but it fits into your daily life more easily than curling up a long cord or stowing a dock somewhere in your bag. Some of the cost comes from the fact that each Card is manufactured in the United States, but coupled with free shipping it’s not a bad deal at all.
Photo 2013-06-06 5 16 27 PMUnfortunately, the Micro USB version of the ChargeCard doesn’t double as a stand like the iPhone 4/4S version; the off-centre micro plug angles the phone too far to the right. It is sturdy enough to stand a phone upright if you find the right perch, but it’s not a recommended use case.
There’s a Lightning-compatible iPhone 5 version coming in a few weeks, which came after the initial Kickstarter roadmap.
ChargeCard is compatible with all Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices. The company is currently offering free international shipping, so check out ChargeCard for Micro USB if you’re interested.
    Recommended.
