Nokia Lumia 950: Predictions For The Next Generation Flagship

nokia-eco-sensor-concept-1
As the readers of this site know, the Lumia 920 was released around November and the Lumia 925 was a mid-life refresh for the phone; same internals while fixing the biggest complaints. In a few months, Nokia will be unveiling a next generation flagship phone that will compete directly with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the next generation iPhone. This list of features is entirely speculative, so don’t take this as a rumor. This list is accounting for what the competition has and what is to come for Windows Phones.  The name was chosen because of a leaked prototype that was very bare-bones…
Display:
The display will likely not be the 5.5 inch screen that will likely be found on the Lumia 926. Rather, it will be a more modest 4.7 inch 1080P Clearblack AMOLED screen covered with corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 and a thinner bezel, in order to allow for one-hand usability. It will have super-sensitive touch as found now on the 92x devices and may even have the ability to slightly charge the battery through solar power.
Internals:
The phone will likely have similar specifications to the higher-end Android devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4, such as a 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, Adreno 320GPU and 2GB of RAM. It will likely have no space for expansion, in order to keep the traditional 9xx design. However, it should have 32GB and 64GB versions for those who have different storage needs. The battery will see a modest increase; to around 2200 mAh yet will last much longer, thanks to less power-hungry components. The cellular connections will remain the same, although it should have unified LTE bands (no different phones for different LTE bands). It should have Dual-Band wireless a/b/g/n/ac support, DLNA and Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP, EDR and LE support.
Camera:
In typical Nokia fashion, there will be great emphasis put on the cameras of the phone. It will likely go above and beyond competitors not only on picture quality, but for zooming. There won’t be a 41MP lens in order to not cannibalize the 10xx devices. Rather, it will most probably pack a 16MP ‘Pureview’ Carl Zeiss lens with 6 lenses internally. It will feature OIS and both Xenon and LED flashes. Essentially, it will build on the camera technologies of the Lumia 925. The front facing camera will probably move up to a 2.0MP camera.
Design:
The design of the Lumia 950 will presumably be a unibody shell, more like that of the Lumia 720, since the 720 was considered the best looking Lumia by both fans and critics alike. It will be made out of polycarbonate and ceramic buttons/camera strip, in order to keep the device both sturdy and somewhat flashy depending on color choice. A wide array of colors will be available, such as:
  • Yellow
  • Black
  • White
  • Red
  • Cyan
  • Grey
And perhaps localized colors as well.
Extra features:
Although many may seem gimmicky, these features are the ones that stick out on flagship phones and draw the non-tech enthusiast crowd to a given handset. All he current ones, (such as in-built Qi wireless charging, for instance) are expected to stick around, and newer ones will come along as well, such as water resistance, harvesting the energy from radio waves, new Nokia-exclusive apps (maybe Instagram, although Instance and Rudy Huyn’s upcoming app cover the community well), and so on.
Operating System:
Since the release will be toward the end of the year, it will definitely ship with Windows Phone 8, version GDR3. This version of WP8 will likely have (according to rumors) support for the specifications of the phone speculated in this article. The big changes (notification center, easy access to system items, IE11, etc..) will come in the upcoming Blue update next year.
Does this sound reasonable, far fetched or otherwise; feel free to comment as you please!

Cool ideas for Windows Phone 8.1/WP9 Concept UI

Wonder what Windows Phone 8.1 (blue) or Windows Phone 9 will bring? Though this is not official, these are some pretty cool gestures and ideas that I think should be strongly considered by Microsoft.
One issue that has seem to be in question is the screen size. If Microsoft was to make their current devices upgradeable this could give rise to some problems. Take the Nokia Lumia 925 for example, it would be hard to fit all the gestures/texts/options available onto its 4.5? screen, Otherwise these ideas are perfect.
Youtube user, Christian Del Rosario has decided to take it upon himself to put together this video showing “elements that windows phone users were asking and features present in windows 8.0/8.1.” Check out the list of features and the video below:

Features

  • Flexible OS
  • New Start screen
  • Interactive live tiles
  • Folders
  • All apps view
  • Integrated search
  • Voice search
  • volume profile
  • New Gestures
  • More gestures
  • Task manager
  • Quick launch
  • Downloads hub
  • Apps portrait/landscape view
  • Full Notification center

Pretty awesome right? Hopefully Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore sees this and decides to implement some of the features into the upcoming updates.

How to Watch the Android 4.3 & Nexus 7 2 Event Live

Google’s Android 4.3 and Nexus 7 2 event will start at 9 AM Pacific, 12 PM Eastern today in San Francisco where Sundar Pichai is expected to introduce the latest version of Android and a new Nexus 7 2 tablet.
Android 4.3 leaks already detail a collection of small system tweaks, a new camera app and support for a new Bluetooth standard that should open the way for smart accessories.
The Nexus 7 2 should also take the stage as the successor to last year’s Nexus 7, bringing a better looking screen, slimmer profile and a rear facing camera as well as a slightly higher price.
Update: Official Google Press Event July 24th Live stream video added.
Nexus 7 2 Announced Landscape
We don’t expect Android 5.0, a larger Nexus 11 tablet or a new Nexus 5 smartphone at the event, but current Android users will still get to see new features that should eventually arrive on their phones and tablets.
Google will offer an Android 4.3 & Nexus 7 2 event live stream according to the event invitation. This should allow everyone to watch from home or from a phone or tablet.

Watch the Google Nexus 7 27 Android 4.3 Event Live

Unlike apple events which only work on iOS and Mac devices,  the Google Android 4.3 and Nexus 7 2 event live stream works on any device that can play YouTube.

Follow Android 4.3 & Nexus 7 Live Blogs

For users that cannot watch a live Gotta Be Mobile will be bringing the news as it happens and other publications will be providing a live blog of the event.
Ars Technica plans a Breakfast with Google liveblog that should help users who cannot listen or watch stay up to date while pretending to work.

During the event, look for a new Nexus 7 2 tablet with a high resolution display, the latest Android 4.3 software, a new processor and a rear-facing camera. Based on leaks the Nexus 7 2 release date is likely set for July 30th.
Google will also very likely announce Android 4.3 updates for the Nexus devices, which could start rolling out that day to select Nexus devices like the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4. The HTC One Nexus and Galaxy S4 Nexus editions on Google Play could see a roll out soon after. Other Android users will likely need to wait for manufactures to get on board and to get carrier approval, but it looks like some companies are already shifting from Android 4.2.2 updates to Android 4.3.

Images of Sony Honami Camera Phone Leaked Ahead of IFA Debut

Another hotly anticipated smartphone that’s expected to make a splash in Germany this year at the IFA trade show is the Sony Honami i1 smartphone. The Android-powered device is expected to be a camera-centric phone that will allow Sony to better position itself against Samsung and Nokia in the space.
The images were posted to China’s Weibo website and reblogged on BGR. These are among the clearest images we’ve seen of the Sony smartphone.
hionami-3honami-1
The Honami i1 is believed to sport a 20-megapixel Exmor RS sensor. What’s new and unique about this smartphone is that Sony will be packing a larger sensor that’s usually made for point-and-shootcameras into this smartphone. The sensor size will be a 1/2.3-inch sensor, which is larger than sensors used on most smartphones today, but still smaller than the 1/1.5-inch PureView sensor that’s equipped on Nokia’s Lumia 1020 Windows Phone 8 device that we recently reviewed.

iPhone 5S Release Date Before September 28th Tipped By Apple

The iPhone 5S release date could come before September 28th according to an analysis of data Apple released late Tuesday.
Apple is not talking about the iPhone 5S or other products specifically, but Tim Cook continued to talk about the,”amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.” in the latest Apple release which includes Apple’s earnings guidance for Q4 2013.
It’s this data that leads one financial firm to believe Apple spilled the beans on the iPhone 5S release date.
The iPhone 5S release date could land on September 20th or a similar date thanks to Apple earnings guidance.
The iPhone 5S release date could land on September 20th or a similar date thanks to Apple earnings guidance.
When Apple announced the company sold 31 million iPhones last quarter they also provided guidance for Q4 2013, predicting revenue between $34 and $37 billion and a gross margin between 36 and 37 percent. These two data points are important in the timing of an iPhone 5S release.
While early analyst predictions point to September and October, this new data helps plot out a calendar for an iPhone 5S release date and iOS 7 release date.

iPhone 5S Release Date Logic

Walter Piecyk of BTIG published a release explaining how Apple’s Q4 2013 earnings guidancepoints to a September iPhone 5S release date.
“We don’t think that Apple can hit its newly issued revenue guidance for the September quarter unless it launches new products. After delivering $35 billion in revenue in the June quarter, management guided to $34-$37 billion next quarter. Revenue would more typically drop multiple billions if the company had no new products planned. With September quickly approaching, this could be the start of a string of new product announcements…”
We expect a new iPhone 5S as well as an iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 this fall as part of the “army” of products Tim Cook refers to but Piecyk explains the numbers Apple shares point to a new iPhone, not a new iPad in September.
“The margin guidance also likely indicates that the new product launch this quarter will be an iPhone and not a lower margin iPad. While new iPhones are lower margin at launch, they are still higher margin than iPad’s.”
Apple timed the iPhone 5 release to arrive a week ahead of the end of Q4 2012 which delivered over 5 million iPhone 5 sales in one weekend and led to a 58% increase in iPhone sales year-over year.
Apple doesn’t need to recover from a poor quarter of iPhone sales like it did in 2012 when Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer blamed a dip in purchases on rumors of a new iPhone telling investors, “We’re reading the same rumors and speculation that you are about a new iPhone and we think this has caused some pause in customers purchasing.”
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t advantages for launching, taking pre-orders and ultimately delivering an iPhone 5S release date in the next 60 to 67 days.
By offering an iPhone 5S release in late September Apple can add to the bottom line to close out the 2013 fiscal year and still set up for a good Q1 2014 with a holiday season that can rely on iPhone 4S upgraders and new iPad models.

iPhone 5S Release Date prediction

Possible iPhone 5S release date timing.
Possible iPhone 5S release date timing.
Neither Piecyk’s statements nor Apple’s release pinpoint a specific iPhone 5S release date, but if Apple plans to capitalize on the iPhone 5S to meet earnings estimates theiPhone 5S release date will likely take place on September 20th to allow a full weekend of iPhone 5S sales in Q4 2013.
Working back from the timing of Apple’s iPhone launch in 2012, this would put Apple’s iPhone 5S launch event during the week of September 9th. September 10th and 11th are likely candidates.
Depending on the timing of the event we could see iPhone 5S pre-orders start within two days. If all of this lines up aniOS 7 release date of September 18th would make sense.
These dates are speculation based on Apple’s typical product launch cycles and timelines,  made possible by the new evidence supporting an iPhone 5S release date before September 28th.

Thinner iPad 5 Possible Thanks to New Screen Tech

The Apple iPad 5 will likely sport a thinner design thanks to a new screen technology that debuted on the iPad mini in 2012.
According to several leaked photos and iPad 5 cases, the new iPad will look a lot like the iPad mini and may measure as much as 20% thinner this fall. The numerous leaks also point to a narrower design thanks to smaller bezels and a 25% lighter iPad.
Apple is counting on new screen technology that it debuted with the iPad mini to make this new design work, and according to a new rumor from Asia the GF2 touch screen technology is on track for the iPad 5.
An iPad 5 concept showing what the iPad 5 could look like next to the iPad 4.
An iPad 5 concept showing what the iPad 5 could look like next to the iPad 4. Martin Hajek
The source of this rumors is DigiTimes which has a hit or miss record with Apple rumors, but as the clock ticks down towards a possible October or November iPad 5 release suppliers will know more about the future of the iPad.
This is the second time DigiTimes shared rumors of an iPad 5 with the new GF2 touchscreen technology, which it first talked about in late January.
New touch screen technology builds the touch sensors into the glass that covers the actual display, saving space which Apple can use to build a thinner iPad. This does not mean that Apple will move away from a Retina Display, which the report claims is in the works with competing processes from Sharp, Samsung and LG.
The video below from iFixit shows the iPad mini using the GF2 touchscreen technology, which allows the iPad to respond to touches when the touchscreen is not directly on top of it.

In the report DigiTimes claims Apple is not holding back on a Retina Display for the iPad mini 2 because of technology, but because it could cannibalize iPad 5 sales. Reports go back and forth on the inclusion of the high-resolution display in the iPad mini 2.
Apple did not talk about the iPad 5 release timing in the recent earnings call, but continued to promise “amazing” products for the fall and into 2014. Based on the lack of a new iPad in the spring and a very successful iPad 4 holiday launch in 2012 a new iPad is likely in the cards for later this year.
Apple issued guidance on Q4 2013 earnings this morning which one firm claims means we will see an iPhone 5S release before September 28th when the quarter ends.
According to Walter Piecyk of BTIG Apple’s new product in Q4 will be an iPhone, which leaves room for an iPad 5 release date in October or November in time to help Apple deliver an impressive Q1 2014 financial result on the back of holiday sales.

Nexus 10 2 Tipped for Near Future, But Don’t Expect It Soon

With the new Nexus 7 announcement just a few hours old, there is already word that it could be joined by another new Nexus tablet in the future, a new Nexus 10. The existence of such a tablet has seemingly been confirmed by Android head Sundar Pichai for the near future though consumers shouldn’t expect to see it arrive soon.
Earlier today, Samsung debuted its new Nexus 7 tablet, a 7-inch device that uses an improved display, slimmer form factor, better processor, a 5MP camera, 4G LTE data speeds while also keeping an extremely affordable price tag. The device will arrive with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, Google’s new operating system, on July 30th.

A new Nexus 10 has been tipped for arrival.
It appears that Android head Sundar Pichai also spilled the beans on another Nexus device, specifically, a new Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung that would replace the current Nexus 10 that’s sold on the Google Play Store.
According to the Wall Street Journal‘s Amir Efrati, Pichai remarked that a new Nexus 10 would be arriving in the near future and that it would be built by Samsung. While a new Nexus 10 could be just around the corner, consumers should start tempering their expectations immediately because “near future” likely doesn’t mean tomorrow or any time soon.
The Nexus 10, unlike the Nexus 7, has only been available since November when it launched alongside Android 4.2. The device remains one of the best large-screen tablets on the market and it remains widely available within the Google Play Store. That said, Google likely isn’t in any rush to deliver a brand new Nexus 10 tablet.
In addition, Google likes to debut its new Nexus hardware with new Android software. With the Galaxy Nexus, it was Android 4.0. With the Nexus 7, it was Android 4.1. With the Nexus 10 and Nexus 4, it was Android 4.2. Google doesn’t necessarily have to stick to this pattern but with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie rumored for October of this year, and the Nexus 10 turning a year old in November, the stars seem to be aligned for a late fall release.
Remember, in the tech world, especially in the Android one, “soon” and “near future” don’t mean that a product is coming tomorrow, or the next day, or the next week. And while it would be great to see a new Nexus 10 launch this summer or in the early fall, October seems like a more likely candidate.

Original Madden Programmer Nets 11 Million Dollars In Unpaid Royalties From EA

madden nfl 25
Today, Madden is widely recognized as THE dominant name in sports gaming. With 29 series installments so far (The 29th being the upcoming Madden NFL 25 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4), this behemoth in the sports gaming franchise shows no signs of slowing down.
But let’s take a step away from the future of Madden for a moment, and turn towards its past. The first ever Madden game, named after football legend John Madden, was released under the name John Madden Football in way back in 1988. The game saw release across the Apple II computer system, one of the first apple computers.
According to Computer and Videogames, the programmer for John Madden Football, Robin Antonick, signed a contract with EA in 1986 stating that not only was he to receive royalties from the original John Madden Football, but from every subsequent game in the series of a style derivative of his original programming… Which so far, according to a federal judge, is every subsequent title up to 1997. EA didn’t see things that way, and held off on paying Antonick any royalties on subsequent games until the matter was brought up in court.
Antonick has been awarded $11 million in unpaid royalties for all games up to 1997, and further scrutiny is being paid to all games from 1997 to present to see if he is entitled to more.

Google providing free WiFi in San Francisco parks

If there’s anything better than WiFi, it’s free WiFi, but that’s usually hard to come by in public places, but that’s quickly changing. San Francisco has been desperately trying to get with the times for a few years now, and thanks to a large chunk of money donated from Google, the city will be implementing WiFi into its public parks.
5637667104_571ae77158_z
At least 31 parks in the city will get free WiFi, and Google’s $600,000 donation will cover the costs of the equipment, installation, and maintenance for the WiFi for two years. After, we’re not sure what will happen, but it’s nice to know that residents in the city can go out and get free WiFi where available, thanks to Google and the government.
Of course, this won’t cover the entire city with WiFi, but many of the popular locations around San Francisco will have free WiFi available, and the network will be added on to the city’s current WiFi offerings at San Francisco International Airport and City Hall, with hopefully even more places to come in the future.
City-wide WiFi was first proposed back in 2007, but that was eventually shot down when the city couldn’t come up with the necessary resources to make it happen. However, this may be the first step into making that plan possible afterall. However, it’s anyone’s guess as to how San Francisco will continue to fund the project after Google’s donation runs dry, but we’re guessing they’ll work something out.

Beats Studio next generation headphones slated for launch in August

Beats Electronics has rolled out the carpet for its next-generation Beats Studio headphones, announcing that they will be available for purchase in August with a price tag of $299 USD. With the latest version comes a promise of improvements across quality and design, as well as a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, something the original lacked.
Beats Studio Headphones
As far as design goes, there are three options featured in the image above. The latest generation of Beats Studio uses a lighter material than the original version, and is designed to be both stronger and more flexible. The headphones feature no straight lines, and none of the screws are visible. Likewise, the ear cups can be adjusted to fit the wearer via an “ergonomic adjustment mechanism,” a change over the last version.
The headphones utilize adaptive noise cancellation, more commonly called ANC, which includes two modes: a music mode, and an increased noise cancellation mode that results from unplugging the cable. In the former mode, Beats Electronics says the combination between noise cancellation and music is balanced, with the materials used in the construction aiding the process.
Beats Acoustic Engine – a digital tuning software – is used to tune to Beats Studio headphones for proper sound quality, while manually swapping batteries is a thing of the past with the integrated rechargeable battery. Use time comes in around the 20 hour mark on a charge, which is achieved using either a USB cable or a standard outlet. There’s a built-in charge indicator in the form of 5 LEDs, as well as automatic shutdowns to help conserve the battery.
Said Jimmy Iovine, “With the original Studio headphone we set out to prove that people all around the world care enough about sound to invest in it – and we did. Now we are taking it a step further. The new Studio is tuned with balance, accuracy and emotion, has a breathtaking design and truly innovative technology. This is the sound of the future.”

Google Play Games app now available

We knew the Google Play Games app would be arriving in the Play Store some time today, and now it is officially available for download. The same app will come pre-loaded on the newly announced Nexus 7 tablet, and will serve as a central hub of sorts for viewing game achievements, leaderboards, checking out what friends are playing, and all that good stuff.
Capture
Word surfaced about the Google Play Games app from Google at its event earlier today, with the news perhaps being drowned out by the excitement surrounding the new Nexus 7 and Android 4.3. As its name suggest, this is a dedicated gaming app, and makes it easier to stay on top of one’s Android gaming habit, and makes it a bit easier for friends to check out what you’re up to.
The app is only 2MB in size, and is available for devices running Android 2.2 and higher. Google is hailing its biggest features as a unified system of sorts that brings all the aspects of Android gaming together. With the app, users can discover new games by seeing what their friends are playing, and vice versa.
Players can play games with their friends, and see all the pertinent details related to that. The Google Play Games app can also be used to jump into multiplayer games, and to compare scores with other gamers playing the same app. There’s also achievement tracking, letting gamers see, for example, what they’ve unlocked for a particular game, and what achievements are left to earn.
In case you missed it, the Google Play store was also in news today for adding a textbook category, giving it a further push into the educational market. The category allows students to either rent or purchase textbooks, depending on need and availability.

Apple issues developer portal status update

Last week, an attempted hack on Apple’s developer portal resulted in some downtime as the company pulled the system to investigate the issue. This led to the portal being taken down for an extended period of time, of which Apple has issued a status update advising its members of where it is in the process and what its plans entail.
slafadevelopers1
Following the portal’s downtime, Apple revealed that no user data had been taken, and a bit after that security researchers Ibrahim Balic took credit for the breach, saying that he did so to expose vulnerabilities with the system. He then reported his findings to Apple, and assured users that he has not used any of the data he had access to via his activities.
Said the Apple statement: “We apologize for the significant inconvenience caused by our developer website downtime. We’ve been working around the clock to overhaul our developer systems, update our server software, and rebuild our entire database. While we complete the work to bring our systems back online, we want to share the latest with you.”
status
The statement goes on to detail the company’s plans, which starts with rolling out the updated Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, Apple Developer Forums, Bug Reporter, pre-release developer libraries, and the videos. Following that, Apple will then put the software downloads back in place, allowing developers to nab iOS 7 and other files.
Once all of those are back in place, the rest of the updated system will be made live again. In order to make it easier for developers and curious parties to follow along, Apple has put up a status page with green lights showing how far along in its process it is. As already mentioned, memberships that expire when the portal is down will automatically be extended.

Plantronics BackBeat GO 2 Bluetooth earbuds unveiled

Plantronics has announced its next generation Bluetooth earbuds, the BackBeat GO 2. The earbuds are designed to meet a variety of needs, and feature a battery life of up to 10 hours. The earbuds are available for purchase as of yesterday from the company’s retail partners and online in the US, Canada, Europe, and Hong Kong. Price comes in at $79.99 USD.
backbeat-go2-white
The BackBeat GO 2 were designed to be usable for those who are exercising or other such activities with the use of Sweat Proof coating, offering P2i moisture protection. In addition, the fit and stabilizers have been improved over the previous generation of the earbuds, improving both the audio quality and how comfortable they are to wear.
One of the particularly nice extras that come with the GO 2 is the portable case, which includes a battery that can be pre-charged before, for example, a long trip or a day at the beach. This portable case can be used to charge the earbuds two times before it needs to be recharged, tripling the estimated life of the earphones. When used with an iPhone or iPad, there’s also a battery status meter.
In addition to the charge meter, there are also voice prompts that are played to advise the user of how much of a charge is remaining.
