Moto X users will get an extra 50GB free Google Drive storage

Moto X users will get an extra 50GB free Google Drive storage
We all know that whenever Google wants to sweeten the deal a bit when selling a piece of hardware, the go-to deal that is always included is extra Google Drive storage, and the Motorola Moto X isn't immune to that treatment. Although the Moto X's DROID cousins are said to be accompanied by 6 months of free Google Play Music All Access, the Moto X buyers will be getting extra Google Drive space.

According to Motorola, anyone who buys a new Moto X will get an extra 50GB of free storage on Google Drive for two years. When you combine that with the 15GB you get for free, that's a solid 65GB of storage space in the cloud for your email, documents and photos. This deal actually puts the Moto X on a slightly lower rung than other devices. Lower-end Chromebooks tend to come with 100GB of extra space for two years, and the Chromebook Pixel of course comes with a whopping 1TB of storage for 3 years.

Which would you prefer: 50GB of storage for 2 years, or 6 moths of Google Play Music All Access?

Samsung Galaxy Note III to be announced on September 4, Korean media claims

Samsung Galaxy Note III – we all know it is coming sooner than later. The exact date of its announcement, on the other hand, is not as clear, but according to a recent report by Korean media, the tech company has chosen to make the unveiling of the device on September 4. That is two days before the IFA2013 expo kicks off in Berlin, Germany – the city where the Samsung Galaxy Note III announcement is expected to take place. As a side note, previous rumors hinted at a possible announcement of the Galaxy Note III on September 6.

In addition to the Galaxy Note III, Samsung is expected to announce a wearable product as well. Referred to as the Samsung Gear, it is a smartwatch device, presumably similar in functionality to the Sony Smartwatch. Word has it that Samsung is aiming to launch Gear before Apple manages to release an alternative of its own – the so-called iWatch.

As for the Samsung Galaxy Note III, the smartphone is expected to come with a 5.7-inch, 1080p AMOLEDscreen, Snapdragon 800 chip, 13MP camera, and Android 4.3 out of the box. These specifications, however, might vary from one market to another as according to rumors, the Samsung Galaxy Note III may come in several different versions.

OmniVision reveals details about the Motorola Moto X camera

OmniVision reveals details about the Motorola Moto X camera
We already know quite a lot about the camera inside the Motorola Moto X. We've shown you the tech that is behind it and the quality of the photos it can produce. But having a little more detailed technical info won't hurt, would it? Meet the OV10820 by OmniVision – the camera module outfitted in Moto's latest handset.

What's so special about it, you ask? Well, that it has a 10.5MP sensor with native 16:9 aspect ratio is something you might have already heard of. That it has a new RGBC color filter for improved light capturing is another detail we discussed not long ago. What you may not know, on the other hand, is that OmniVision's solution comes with a OV660 companion chip for image processing. Basically, it takes the RGBC information captured by the sensor and outputs standard RGB Bayer data that can then be used to create the actual image in digital file format.

The sensor itself is 1/2.6-inch in size, with 1.4-micron BSI pixels for even better low-light imagery. Digging further into details, the OV10820 is technically capable of recording 4K2K video at resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels while maintaining a full field of view at a rate of 30 frames per second. That doesn't mean, however, that the Motorola Moto X can capture video beyond 1080p, although its camera module is capable of doing so.

The OmniVision OV10820 is making its debut in the Motorola Moto X, but seeing it under the hoods of other handsets isn't out of the question. It is currently being produced in volume, along with the OV660 companion chip.

Take better night photos with this detachable flash for smartphones and tablets

Despite the tremendous effort smartphone manufacturers have put in improving the low-light performance of their devices' cameras, nothing beats having a bright, powerful flash to illuminate the subject. Unfortunately, the majority of today's handsets come with LEDs on the back, which just don't work well at distances of over a few feet away. Well, there's a company that wants to solve this problem with an accessory of its own.

The iblazr, as it is called, is a portable, detachable flash for use with smartphones and tablets. Featuring four Cree LEDs and 60-degree optics, it connects to the audio jack of an Android or iOS device, while a dedicated application ensures that the flash and the camera's shutter stay in sync. What's more is that the iblazr can be set to provide constant light for night videos.

With its 200mAh built-in battery, the iblazr can assist with taking over 1000 photos. The cell may also provide 40 minutes of constant light, but it will last for 3 hours if used in low-power mode. Recharging the accessory's internal battery can be done by plugging it into a USB port.

As of this writing, iblazr is only available via Kickstarter where it needs another $4000 to meet its funding goals. A unit can be pre-ordered by pledging $39 or more, with an estimated shipping date in December of this year.

Court Says It’s Legal for Your Phone to Snitch On You. Here’s How to Muzzle It.

In a majority 2 to 1 decision handed down by the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Texas, law enforcement got the green light to be able to access your phone’s location information without a search warrant. What police and other officials need is a simple court order, which is issued with a lower standard than the traditional search warrant.
“Authorities only need a court order and not a more stringent search warrant to obtain cellphone records that can be used to track a person’s movements, a federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday,” the Associated Pressreported.
The Fifth Circuit overturned an earlier Houston federal judge ruling. Under that overturned ruling, that judge says that cellphone data is protected and could only be obtained by officials with a search warrant.
“The Fourth Amendment, safeguarded by the courts, protects only reasonable expectations of privacy,” the Fifth Circuit judges wrote in overturning the ruling. Reasonable expectations, apparently, don’t extend to cellphone location data.
The effect is that law enforcement officials now only need a court order. To get that court order, they just need to demonstrate that there are reasonable grounds to believe that this information that they are seeking will aid them in their investigation. The legal standard here is much lower than if they were to have to seek a full search warrant.
Still the constitutionality of how cellphone data is obtained is still being hotly debated with varying courts split on the decision. New Jersey’s Supreme Court ruled that a warrant is required.
Maine and Montana also required a warrant to be obtained to get location information from a person’s phone. The beauty of this means that when you get stopped or detained by a police officer, if you’ve turned off your phone’s location services, your phone shouldn’t be able to snitch on you. Still, if law enforcement turns to your carrier for the same information, your mileage may vary depending on the provider you have and the state where you live.
For users who are concerned about privacy rights when using a smartphone, you can turn off select location services on your phone so that your device would be a little more cloaked. However, do keep in mind that there are other ways that authorities can still access location information by seeking this information from your cell phone service provider, rather than directly off your device. In any case, on Android, you’ll need to go to your device’s system settings menu. Tap on Location Services and then you can toggle what location services to enable or disable.
Screenshot_2013-07-31-20-05-17
On iOS, users can prevent apps from accessing location data by going into Settings, then Privacy, and then you can toggle which apps have privilege to location data.
photo
Even though you may not be using GPS features, like Google Maps or GPS navigation, you can still disclose your location information through casual acts like taking a picture. If you allow your camera to have and store geolocation data with your captured images, you can give away where you’ve been with the images you’ve captured. In iOS, you can turn this off under the Location Services in the Privacy menu while on Android, you can toggle this inside your Camera app’s settings.
Screenshot_2013-07-31-20-07-36
If law enforcements turn instead to your cellphone provider, there isn’t much that you can do to conceal your location. Then again, in light of a security state with PRISM, you really shouldn’t be hiding any aspect of your life really.

BBM for Android In Testing

BlackBerry Messaging or BBM for Android users is now in its testing stages.
According to Adam Zeis of Crackberry, the BBM for Android is now available to a small subset of users inside the BlackBerry Beta Zone, an exclusive area for BlackBerry testers. Unfortunately, at this stage BBM for Android is only available to users who receive a special cross-platform invitation directly from BlackBerry.
The BoyGenuisReport was allegedly sent a screenshot of the application’s login screen itself. It depicts only the updated BlackBerry Messaging logo and options for signing in with, or creating a BlackBerry ID. It seems users need a BlackBerry ID to sign into the application regardless of the platform that they are using BBM on.

While CrackBerry believes that both BBM for Android and BBM for iPhone are now in the last stages of testing, so far, there haven’t been any reports or screenshots of BBM for iOS.
BlackBerry announced that it would bring its messaging service to iOS and Android devices at this year’s BlackBerry Live event. Using the free application, users will be able to group chat with as much as 30 people and share text messages, photos and voice messages between each other. At the time BlackBerry said that it would make both of the applications available for free to users sometime this summer.
By making BlackBerry Messaging available to users on other platforms, BlackBerry is hoping to make its messaging service the defacto-standard for all smartphone users. Should they succeed, it’s likely that the company is counting on the enhanced features that are only available on its devices, to attract users to their hardware ecosystem.
Unfortunately for BlackBerry, the competition for a cross-platform BBM messaging service has only become more entrenched since BlackBerry made its announcement back in May. Although Apple’s iMessages is still exclusive to the company’s products, Google and Microsoft have both made even larger bids to conquer messaging with revamped versions of Skype and Google+ Hangouts.

Google to Temporarily Extend Gmail Sync Support for Windows

Google has announced that it will now delay shutting off support for its older Gmail syncing solution for Windows Phone users until December 31st.
That move means that users of devices running Windows Phone 8 will still be able to have their appointments and email sync to their Windows Phone devices until then. Google had already announced that it would stop supporting Microsoft’s Exchange Active Sync for users on January 31 of this year. Following that announcement, Microsoft and Google reached an agreement that kept Gmail sync working while Microsoft created an update that would add support for Gmail’s new syncing standards. That agreement expired as of July 31st.
Windows Phone 8S by HTC Yellow

A fix for the Gmail syncing issue is actually a part of the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update that was officially detailed this past spring. While it’s is now shipping pre-installed on new devices like the Nokia Lumia 925 and the Lumia 1020, it has yet to make its way to all other Windows Phone 8 users.
That Microsoft convinced Google to extend the shut-off date is both good and bad news for Windows Phone users. It’s good because the two companies have now given users even more time to install the update. It’s bad because this could mean that the Windows Phone 8 GDR2 update could take that long to roll out to all eligible users.
Even though Microsoft guarantees users that they’ll see the update at some point, the possibility of it taking Microsoft six months to deliver an update to their device isn’t likely to impress Windows Phone users. Especially since Microsoft is already seen as dragging their feet in regard to Windows Phone updates. This past week even Nokia executives made remarks about the need for Microsoft to ship timely updates.
How the impending shutdown will affect Windows Phone 7 users is still unclear, as Windows Phone 7 devices were not able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8. Many of those users are now stuck with a device that might suddenly stop working with their Gmail account. If the update situation for Windows Phone 8 is bad, then the situation for Windows Phone 7 users is about as dire as they come. Microsoft last shipped an update to Windows Phone 7 users in Windows Phone 7.8, however many users have yet to get their hands on it almost a year later.
It’s unlikely that these users will ever see a fix for their devices. Google does not offer a native Gmail experience for Windows Phone users.

iOS 7 Beta Reveals More iPhone 5S Details

The iOS 7 beta is full of information about the rumored iPhone 5S, revealing code for a Fingerprint reader and now possibly showing details about the Apple A7 processor that will likely début inside the iPhone 5S this fall, including a surprising partnership.
The iPhone 5S will likely use a new Apple A7 processor, which rumors indicated would come from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Industry watchers saw this as Apple moving away from Samsung as the rivalry between the two companies grew.
Further evidence of the split appeared in mid July when news that Samsung would join up with Apple again in 2015, after the iPhone 6 release appeared. This report again pointed to an iPhone 5S without a Samsung powered A7 processor.
The iPhone 5S could use aSamsung made Apple A7 processor, based on information in the iOS 7 beta.

A new analysis of the iOS 7 beta 4 release by Nick Frey, shared with 9to5Mac, reveals code that points to Apple A7 processor support, adding to the speculation that the iPhone 5S will use a new Apple A7 processor this fall.
The report shows an Apple A series processor which is very likely the Apple A7 processor, and a further analysis reveals that Apple is working with Samsung for this A7 processor.
The iOS 7 beta contains code that hints at a Samsung manufactured Apple A7 processor in the iPhone 5S.

9to5Mac reports that this new chip contains Samsung components to power the display, and could contain more. The report also cites a source who says Apple was able to push past roadblocks relating to the processing speed of the A7 and A8 processors.
Apple is reportedly using the A7 processor in the iPhone 5S which would put the Apple A8 chip in the rumored iPhone 6 for 2014.
While this is a surprise in the sense that it flies against the flow of rumors, it is not completely out of line. Apple is reportedly using Samsung for the iPad mini 2 Retina Display because other suppliers cannot deliver the quantity and quality Apple demands.
As the iOS 7 beta approaches a rumored Gold Master and September release more details about possible iPhone 5S features are making their way into the code. We could see additional details in early August when the iOS 7 beta 5 release could arrive.
Earlier this week, Hamza Sood discovered the iOS 7 beta 4 includes references to a fingerprint reader in the iPhone home button. This matches up with multiple iPhone 5S rumors that claim Apple is planning to improve security of the iPhone 5S with a fingerprint reader.
Rumors suggest the iPhone 5S release will arrive in late September with a similar design and 4-inch display, but with an improved camera and a dual LED flash.

Moto X Google Edition Coming Soon

The Moto X is official and it will be heading to all five of the nation’s largest carriers including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless. However, there will be another option for those that don’t want to deal with a carrier or its bloatware as Google has confirmed a Moto X Google Edition that will be launching sometime soon.
At a press event in New York City, Motorola finally debuted its long awaited flagship, the Moto X, which will be arriving on shelves in late August, early September, in two different variations. The first, a non-customizable model. The second, a fully customizable device that will be heading to AT&T’s LTE network in the coming weeks.
The Moto X is heading to the Google Play Store.
The Moto X is heading to the Google Play Store.
Those devices will receive updates from Motorola, with carrier approval, and will also come with carrier bloatware, otherwise known as carrier specific software as well. They aren’t Nexus devices. Those looking for a more Google experience with the Moto X will apparently get the chance as the company does plan to release a Google Play Edition sometime in the future.
The Moto X Google Edition will come unlocked with vanilla Android, just like the Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition and HTC One Google Edition. It will also get updates straight from Google. What this means is that for a price, users will be able to get a Moto X that doesn’t have bloatware and doesn’t have updates that are subject to carrier approval.
Google also offers Google Editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.
Google also offers Google Editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.
Google isn’t talking release dates or pricing though The Verge says that the device will be coming sometime “soon.” Soon doesn’t necessarily mean tomorrow but it likely means that we should see the Moto X Google Edition arrive in the near future. It will more than likely run on AT&T and T-Mobile just as other Nexus devices do though Google isn’t confirming that.
While this device may not have the appeal of a Galaxy S4 or HTC One thanks to the fact that the Moto X doesn’t use a skin, it may appeal to those that want a Moto X that is free from carrier

Moto X Deal Arrives Minutes After Launch

The new Moto X has only been around for a few minutes and already, there is a deal that prospective Moto X buyers can take advantage of, if they don’t mind heading to the nation’s fifth largest carrier.
Earlier today, U.S. Cellular began taking pre-orders on the Moto X, the first carrier to do so, but certainly not the last. Tucked away in that pre-order is the first Moto X deal, a deal that comes mere minutes after the device’s arrival.
The Moto X Active display shows notifications better than an LED.
Just minutes after launch, a Moto X deal has emerged.
U.S. Cellular, like the other carriers, will be offering the Moto X starting at $199.99 on-contract. That’s a price tag that AT&T and Sprint will be using and it’s one that we should see emerge at Verizon as well. However, U.S. Cellular is actually offering a discount on the Moto X, already, to those that are making the switch from another carrier.
The carrier is offering a $75 discount on the Moto X to those that come from elsewhere, a discount that drops the price all the way down to $125 on-contract, an extremely affordable price for a device of this caliber. Buyer will want to note that this is for the non-customizable Moto X and not the customizable model. The Moto X that utilizes Motorola’s Moto Maker customization model is exclusive to AT&T for the time being but will be heading elsewhere later on this year.
U.S. Cellular is also throwing in a free Motorola boom headset which has a value of $60, making this an even better deal that it already was.
This is a great deal for those looking to buy the new Moto X.
The Moto X is expected to touch down later this month.
This is likely the first, of what will be a long line of Moto X deals that emerge over the course of its existence. Android phones typically see deep discounts almost immediately after launch so it’s actually a little unsurprising to see a deal emerge this soon after its announcement.
The Moto X will be out on shelves in late August, early September and it will be heading to all five of the nation’s largest carriers. It will also be heading to the Google Play Store as Google has confirmed a Moto X Google Edition for arrival.
Motorlola’s new flagship features a 4.7-inch 720p display, dual-core processor, LTE data speeds, 10MP Clear Pixel camera, and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It will receive updates from Motorola but software will still be subject to carrier approval.

iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5S: What Buyers Need to Know

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S are battling it out in the headlines as consumers wait for the new iPhone for 2013, which will likely arrive within the next two months.
Over the last 9 months rumors of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 leaked out an a growing rate, delivering small tidbits of information about Apple’s new iPhone.
During this time, it became increasingly clear that the new iPhone (2013) is the iPhone 5S, rather than the iPhone 6. Apple has yet to announce an official name for the new iPhone, but there is enough evidence to point to an “S” release in 2013.
There are also a number of iPhone 6 rumors and leaks that claim to reveal details about the next, next iPhone which isn’t expected until 2014. These rumors often focus on a new design or a larger display, which are unlikely in the 2013 iPhone.
The iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 duke it out for consumer interest.
The iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 duke it out for consumer interest.
Despite the clear indication of two separate iPhone models, an iPhone 6 in 2014 and an iPhone 5S this year, many publications continue to mix rumors for the iPhone 5S with the iPhone 6, spreading confusion for people that plan to buy a new iPhone in September or October.
This guide to iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S rumors will help clear the clutter from rumors for two new iPhone models and help buyers better understand what they can expect from a new iPhone in September, or soon after.

iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5S – The Name

The name of the new Apple iPhone is up in the air until Apple formally announces it at a launch event, but as the seventh iPhone release approaches we there is a pattern to the new iPhone release and rumors that point to an iPhone 5S name this year.
Expect the iPhone 5S name in 2013 and the iPhone 6 in 2014.
Expect the iPhone 5S name in 2013 and the iPhone 6 in 2014.
The name of the new iPhone is important as some would argue an Phone 5S does not stir up the same impulse to buy as an iPhone 6 name would, even with the same design and features. Former Apple ad-man Ken Segall opined that Apple should release the iPhone 6 this year to better compete with the Galaxy S4 and HTC One, both which carry names that reflect a new

While some argue that Apple’s iPhone 5S naming scheme is a problem, it actually allows Apple to keep customers happier longer than if it released a brand new phone every year.
Here’s the Apple iPhone naming scheme so far, and what we expect in 2013 and 2014.
  • iPhone – 2007
  • iPhone 3G – 2008
  • iPhone 3GS – 2009
  • iPhone 4 – 2010
  • iPhone 4S – 2011
  • iPhone 5 – 2012
  • iPhone 5S – 2013 estimated
  • iPhone 6 - 2014 estimated
Multiple analysts agree this is an “S” iPhone release and the numerous iPhone leaks point to an iPhone 5S in 2013. In Short, any article talking about the iPhone 6 in 2013, is very likely referring to the iPhone 5S release, not an actual iPhone 6.

iPhone 6 Release vs. iPhone 5S Release

It’s still too early for any hard iPhone 5S release dates, and way to early for a specific iPhone 6 release, but we are starting to hear rumors line up.
Shoppers should expect the iPhone 5S release in 2013, and an iPhone 6 in 2014 according to leaks and rumors.
Shoppers should expect the iPhone 5S release in 2013, and an iPhone 6 in 2014 according to leaks and rumors.
The iPhone 6 release is not expected until 2014, though some expect it to arrive earlier than others. Glen Yeung of Citi Research expects an iPhone 6 release date in the first quarter of 2014, while Peter Misek of Jeffries claims the iPhone 6 release will come in June 2014. While looking this far into the future it is possible that these dates could change, but notably they focus on a 2014 timeline.
An iPhone 5S release is much closer. In fact, it could come as early as September 20th, so it’s a good time to start saving if you plan to buy the new iPhone or a cheaper iPhone 5 this fall.
The rumored iPhone 5S event on September 6th is apparently not in the cards, but many sources point to an iPhone 5S release in September or early October. Apple’s latest guidance to investors appears to hint at an iPhone 5S release before September 28th.

iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5S Design & Display

The biggest likely differences between the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6 are display size and design. This information is based on leaks and on commentary form Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Cook repeatedly slams current high-resolution big screen displays as having too many trade-offs for Apple to put in an iPhone. This, combined with multiple leaks showing what is likely an iPhone 5S body, is enough to assume the iPhone 5S will look a lot like the iPhone 5 and feature a 4-inch display.
The iPhone 5S display may feature new tech, but will likely stay at 4-inches.
The iPhone 5S display may feature new tech, but will likely stay at 4-inches.
We could see a new type of display inside, namely a Sharp IGZO display inside the iPhone 5S, which has the potential to deliver a better look, better touch sensitivity and better battery life. The video below offers a look at a IGZO display that could make its way into an iPhone 5S.

Even though Tim Cook is currently slamming bigger displays on smartphones, we could see Apple introduce one on the iPhone 6 in 2014 alongside claims it is the best display since Retina.
An iPhone 6 prototype reportedly came with a 4.8-inch display with a higher than Retina Display resolution. Couple this with advances in high-resolution large screen displays like the new bright LG 5.2-inch super thin 1080P display and there is an opening for a new screen size.
While there are no definite iPhone 6 design leaks, if Apple is planning an iPhone 6 for 2014 we expect a completely new design. Here are several iPhone 6 concepts that show multiple takes on what the iPhone 6 could look like.

iPhone 6 vs. iPhone 5S Features

The iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 will likely be as different as the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, which is exciting for buyers of the iPhone 5S and for those waiting another year for the iPhone 6.
While Apple has not confirmed details about either phone, we have a good idea of what to expect in the iPhone 5S spec and feature department this year, and some broad ideas for the iPhone 6 features.
The iPhone 5S design may be similar to the iPhone 5, but with a Dual LED pill shaped flash.
The iPhone 5S design may be similar to the iPhone 5, but with a Dual LED pill shaped flash.

iPhone 5S Features and Specs

The following iPhone 5S features and specs come from months of rumors and analyst notes which eventually line up enough to paint a clear picture of the new iPhone.
  • 4-inch Retina Display (Possibly IGZO)
  • Apple A7 processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 12-13MP Rear camera
  • Dual LED Flash
  • Fingerprint Reader
  • iOS 7
Some rumors also point to an iPhone 5S with NFC support, but this feature is one that isn’t as easy to put on the bullet list of very likely coming on the iPhone 5S. There is a possibility for a slightlylarger iPhone 5S battery.

iPhone 6 Features

The iPhone 6 features and specs are harder to pin down as we hear more about small rumors and Apple patents and prototypes that paint a general picture of the iPhone 6. Based on that we expect,
  • Apple A8 processor
  • Larger screen
  • Higher Resolution
