Best New iPhone and iPad Games For May 2013

Following the announcement of the Xbox Oneand the upcoming reveal of the PlayStation 4 at E3 home game consoles are dominating the games conversation at the moment, but there are still some great games coming out for the iPhone and iPad.
The games in the App Store might not have the recognition of a new Call of Duty game, but that doesn’t make them any less fun. Here’s a collection of five great recent games for the iPhone and iPad. The games range from quick-hit Facebook-integrated games to hardcore strategy games. We promise none of the games have emotional cut scenes that feature the death of motion-captured dogs.

Tetris Blitz

The only social game on this list, Tetris Blitz takes the blitz formula Pop Cap created for Bejeweled and applies it to Tetris. The goal of Tetris Blitz is to clear as many points and clear as many lines as possible in two minutes. The game uses the same familiar Tetris pieces everyone knows, but adds powerups to the mix, adding a new dimension to the classic puzzle game.
Tetris Blitz is free-to-play and as such it will ask for money for coins to purchase powerups and ask players to link the game to their Facebook account. Like Bejeweled Blitz, however, the game is fun enough to make those things not be too much of a problem.
Tetris Blitz is available now for the iPhone and iPad for free.

Poker Night 2

Poker Night 2
The latest game in Telltale Games’ series of poker games, Poker Night 2 is, simply, a game about playing poker. The difference, however, is who else sits at the table. Poker Night 2 lets players play Texas or Omaha Hold ‘Em against Brock Samson from The Venture Bros., Claptrap from Borderlands, Ash from Evil Dead and Sam from the classic Sam & Max adventure games (with Max sitting on the sidelines). To further add to the character lineup, GlaDOS from Portal and Portal 2 is the dealer.

For hardcore poker players Poker Night 2 may be a little simple, but that doesn’t make the game any less fun. Most of the fun of Poker Night 2 is in listening to the banter between the characters from such disparate fictional universes.
Poker Night 2 is available now for the iPhone and iPad for $4.99.

Impossible Road

Impossible Road
Impossible Road is a deceptively simple game that asks the user to cheat, but not too much. The goal of Impossible Road is to make a white travel as far as possible down a road suspended in an infinite white space. Players can guide the ball left and right down the road, but inevitably they’ll fall off.
The goal it to get back on the course and skip as many gateway checkpoints as possible while doing so. The game is reminiscent of trying to find shortcuts in Rainbow Road in Mario Kart, if the track was randomized every time.
Impossible Road is available now for the iPhone and iPad for $1.99.

Frozen Synapse

Frozen Synapse
The only iPad-only game on this list Frozen Synapse is a port of the fantastic PC strategy game of the same name. In Frozen Synapse players control a small group of soldiers who have to accomplish specific tasks in each mission, typically eliminating an enemy team. The game is turn based, but with a twist. Players map out where their soldiers will move, including where they’re looking and places they’ll stop, and both the player and and enemy teams carry out their actions at the same time.
The game is a unique take on turn-based strategy game, and with randomized levels it rarely gets repetitive. Players can play against each other online, and iPad players can even play against their PC counterparts. Multiplayer is a ton of fun, until the other player takes too long to plan their turn, then it gets frustrating.
Frozen Synapse is available now for the iPad for $6.99.

Ace Patrol

Sid Meier's Ace Patrol
The latest game from Civilization creator Sid Meier is a turn-based game where players control World War I-era planes. Ace Patrol puts players in charge of a team of pilots that fly their way through multiple campaigns. The game feels like the iOS version of a complex miniature war game, but the game never feels too complicated.
The game was designed with the free-to-play model in mind so players can get the game for free, and decide if they like it enough to pay for campaigns after playing the tutorial.
Ace Patrol is available now for iPhone and iPad for free.
