In an interesting revelation, people may soon be asked to give fingerprints or any other biometric details in order to buy a new SIM card.
A newspaper reported that government is likely to roll out a plan under which buyers will have to give their fingerprints as a proof or some other sort of biometric detail before buying a SIM card.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed theDepartment of Telecommunication (DoT) to uphold a centralised database that might be associated to the National Intelligence Grid.
Last year, the DoT had made it obligatory for mobile service providers to authenticate an applicant before issuing a new SIM card. But in spite of repeated warnings, the service providers were found breaching the rules.
