New York City gets its own .nyc domain, London and Paris likely to follow

Icann has approved New York City’s petition to have its own domain, and thus making it the first U.S. city to bear such an honor.

Local residents and businesses are now able to apply for the .nyc domain, and applications will remain open until late 2013.  The main requirement for registering a .nyc domain is, of course, the applicant must have a physical New York City address.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg states that the .nyc domain will bolster New York City’s presence and put it at the “forefront” of anything digital.  However, other major cities such as London and Paris are also trying to obtain their own domain, and have reportedly already passed Icann’s initial evaluation process.
