After ruling the Indian smartphone market for several years in a row, Micromax seems to have dropped the ball with the modestly specced and overpriced Canvas 4. Luckily for our Indian friends, we have options.
Better and/or cheaper options, like the iBerry Auxus Nuclea N1, Gionee Elife E5 and Spice Mi-525 Pinnacle FHD. This last one might actually be the overall best, as it crushes the Canvas 4 spec-wise while keeping the price low.
Right off the bat, the Pinnacle FHD looks more attractive for the regular tech-savvy folk courtesy of a 5-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pix res) panel. Remember, the newest “flagship” from Micromax sports a run-of-the-mill (by 2013 standards) 720p display.
Moving on, we expect the Mi-525 to have the edge on raw power as well, since it packs a quad-core MediaTek MT6589T processor clocked at 1.5 GHz (vs. a 1.2 GHz MT6589 unit inside the Canvas 4).
From there on out, you can’t say the Pinnacle FHD has many other aces up its sleeve, but the two mentioned above should be enough to make your choice between these phones easy. Like the Canvas 4, this big guy comes with 1 GB of RAM in tow, plus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, dual SIM and all your usual connectivity options (i.e. Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, etc.).
Truth be told, there are a couple of departments where the Canvas 4 wins the battle against the Pinnacle FHD, as the latter sports 8 MP/2 MP dual cameras and just 8 GB of on-board storage, but ultimately the superior screen and zippier SoC should clearly tip the balance for Spice. Not to mention the battery is a little more generous (2,100 mAh), and the price is lower – Rs. 16,990 ($285) vs. Rs. 17,999 ($302).
