Motorola took the stage today at the D11conference and announced its first big name smartphone for 2013, a phone currently dubbedMoto X, a device that will be built in Texas and one that will come to compete against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One by October of this year.
Over the past few months, rumors of a Motorola X Phone seeped to the surface on a semi-regular basis, teasing consumers who are in the midst of a full blown battle between the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and the iPhone 5. Until today, the Motorola X phone remained a myth, that is, until Motorola executive Dennis Woodside confirmed the device, known as Moto X, on stage at the D11 conference.
Woodside was light on the details but did confirm a few features of the device now known as Moto X. Apparently, the phone will primarily be built in the United States with 70% of the labor occurring at a facility in Texas. The processors will be outsourced from Taiwan while the OLED screens will be brought in from Korea.
The device is expected to have a number of sensors that will take little power from the phone and will apparently do things like provoke the phone to act differently if a car is moving at 60 miles an hour or if it’s taken out of a user’s pocket. Phones like the Samsung Galaxy S4 already employ sensors to help with automation.
Moto X is apparently on track for a release by October which means that it could come far sooner than that. Motorola’s previous flagship smartphones, the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD were both released in October of last year. So it could be that the Moto X phone arrives one year after the arrival of those hero devices.
He says that the Moto X is going to be coming to a number of different U.S. carriers, something that has not been the case with previous Motorola devices. Devices like the Droid RAZR MAXX HD landed on Verizon and Verizon only.
That said, Woodside says that a handful of devices should arrive by October which means that we could see multiple X phones emerge, something that has been rumored in the past. Rumors of a customizable X Phone with tons of color and casing options have persisted and whispering has suggested that the device could feature a 720p display, Android 4.2 and a Qualcomm processor.
