AMD today unveiled the world’s first ever commercially available 5 GHz CPU. Say hello to the FX-9590 8 core (4 module) Piledriver microarchitecture based CPU.
AMD’s FX series of CPUs has always been the company’s fastest (and costliest) chips. However, that brand was slightly diluted with the Bulldozer based FX chips which simply could not keep up with the competition (namely Intel). The company has entirely surrendered the high-end market to Intel as their roadmap suggests no new architecture or refresh coming our way. But AMD had a slightly different plan to surprise us, and surprise us they did.

The AMD FX-9590 is the world’s first commercially available CPU clocked at a blistering fast (and high) 5 GHz. But before you go all nuts over how this was achieved with air-cooling you have to know that 5 GHz is the maximum achievable state, in other words 5 GHz is the “Max Turbo” speed. At 5 GHz, we really believe that the Bulldozer-enhanced CPUs (=Piledriver) will perform at par with Intel’s offerings, albeit with a far higher TDP. AMD had designed their Bulldozer architecture with a long pipeline and achieving high clock speeds was the target from the start, the only way that the AMD processors came close to the performance of Intel’s (superior) Core microarchitecture based processors.
Beginning this summer (which has already started), the two new AMD FX CPUs based on the company’s latest Piledriver CPU architecture will be available to system builders across the world. Both the CPU models pack 4 modules (8 cores) and come with 8 MB of L3 cache.
- AMD FX-9590 with Max Turbo clock of 5 GHz
- AMD FX-9370 with Max Turbo clock of 4.7 GHz
Sadly, the base clock of either CPUs hasn’t been mentioned anywhere. We believe that the base core clock will be far less, perhaps in the range of 4.2-4.4 GHz. Both SKUs come fully unlocked (for you Overclocking enthusiasts) and feature the new AMD Turbo Core 3.0 technology which allows for such high clock speeds (only in short bursts, for a limited time). Pricing for the new CPU models weren’t revealed.
