Microsoft is either giving away first generation Surface tablets for free or selling them at dirt cheap prices in an effort to clear stocks, perhaps before the 2nd generation Surface products arrive.
Teachers who attended the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) conference are eligible to receive a free Microsoft Surface RT tablet in the latest giveaway by Microsoft. The number of units up for this promotion could be as high as 10,000, so why is Microsoft suddenly so keen clearing nearly $5 million worth of Surface RT stock?
In late May, Microsoft was offering heavy discounts on their Surface products at TechEd North America. The deal, not just limited to teachers, allowed attendees to purchase a Surface RT 64 GB with the touch cover for just $99.99. I’m sorry if I call that anything but a steal, because it really is (at that price). At the same event, the Surface Pro 128 GB was on sale for $399.99.
