Well, this is something that doesn’t happen often. The carrier-specific versions of the Xyboard tablets by Motorola (specifically, those for Verizon) will get a software update, whereas the Wi-Fi-only models won’t. Yes, you read that right. And no, we haven’t gotten it backwards. Things usually tend to happen the exact other way round, with Wi-Fi-only tablets getting a lot more updates than carrier-specific models. But such is life in the Android world, it brings us surprises sometimes.
Motorola has updated the website where it lists information about future software upgrades (or lack thereof) for its devices. And sure enough, both the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and the Droid Xyboard 10.1 (pictured below) for Verizon now get a message saying an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be provided. This while the Wi-Fi-only Xyboard 8.2 and Xyboard 10.1 “will remain on Android 4.0.4 (ICS)”, according to the same source.
Furthermore, Android Police has managed to confirm with some ‘Verizon contacts’ that this info is in fact accurate, and Jelly Bean (well, at least the first iteration) is indeed headed to Big Red’s Xyboards. When it will arrive, though, is still unknown. And we don’t expect it to be anytime soon. That said, an update is an update, and an update is always good, so kudos to Verizon here for probably requesting an update that Motorola itself wasn’t bothered to provide for its Wi-Fi-only tablets.
