Internet access from the sky to remote areas in the country could be a reality, with India expressing interest in Google Inc’s Project Loon.
The search engine giant’s recently launched project envisaging 30 helium-filled balloons carrying antennaes, computers, batteries and navigational equipment intend to provide internet coverage over 1,200 sq kms. Currently, the project is being run as a pilot in New Zealand and is expected to be rolled out elsewhere based on the outcome.
“Interestingly, while we are still in the pilot phase, we have been getting mulitple queries from different countries including India who are interested in the project,” said Todd Rowe, Managing Director, Global Channel Sales, Google Inc.
He didn’t disclose the timeframe by when the feedback from the pilot could be considered for a full-fledged roll-out.
Meanwhile, Google intends to double its footprint in south by 2014 and has tied up with Getit Infomedia to help SMEs in the south to go online. Overall, it targets to touch over 10 lakh SMEs. “We have so far covered 2 lakh and will cross 5-lakh mark by 2015,” said Todd.
