Dictionary.com has long been an important reference app for mobile users, and the company has attempted to expand beyond the base usability — looking up the definition of a word — with new features and push notifications.
The app was recently redesigned on Android, and today the company unveiled a new homescreen for iPhone users, bringing instant access to Word of the Day and The Hot Word, a daily exposition on language’s most interesting facts and stories.
New to the app is a rhyming dictionary, a $1.99 in-app purchase, offering 5000 words to tease and perfect poems and verse. The Dictionary also has 2000 new entries, many dealing with the latest equivocations of language like “photobomb” and “digital native.”

Recently, Dictionary.com introduced a fascinating little app called Thesaurus Rex, offering over half a million synonyms in an offline database which can be filtered by relevance, complexity, length and more.
The company also offers a rhyming dictionary as an add-on in Thesaurus Rex, but the majority of the content is offered for free.
Both apps are great for students, and are worthy downloads for anyone looking to spruce up his or her vocabulary.
Download Dictionary.com and Thesaurus Rex for iOS.
