A report by DigiTimes earlier today claims that due to issues with its fingerprint sensor's design, among others, Apple's upcoming iPhone refresher – the 5S, has been delayed:
"Volume production of fingerprint-recognition and LCD driver chips for the iPhone 5S should have started at the end of June or early in July, but issues related to yield rates will delay commercial production of the two chips to the end of July, therefore affecting the initial supply of the iPhone 5S, the sources explained."
In case you somehow missed all the frantic hype – the iPhone 5S is expected to come with a fingerprint scanner embedded into its Home button. And lest you think a mere sapphire glass got us speculating about the possibility, we remind you that almost exactly a year ago Apple snatched biometric security firm AuthenTec for a reported $356 million. Moreover, PayPal's Chief Information Security Officer has hinted as much in a keynote speech two months ago, and that's as reputable a source you're likely to get when unofficial information is involved.
Of course, we're not at all oblivious to skepticism. In fact, for all we know, the sensor could very well be intended for the iPhone after the 5S. Whether that turns out to be the case, we'll have to wait and see.
