How would you describe Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Mini in one word? Off the top of my head, I can come up with “average”, “mediocre” or “good but not great”. How about HTC’s upcoming One Mini? Likely a tad snazzier design-wise and sporting a crisper screen, but still a little underwhelming.
Meanwhile, there’s nothing underwhelming about ZTE’s Nubia Z5 Mini, which had a surprisingly short run in the rumor mill and went official earlier today. Based on its market name, you might think the Z5 Mini is a modest relative of the 5-incher unveiled back in December 2012.
Only that’s not really the case. In fact, some could actually view this as an upgrade over the original Nubia Z5. How come? Well, for one thing, it packs the same 2,300 mAh battery while sporting a tinier, lower-res screen. That should equate to better autonomy and, in my book, it’s a big step in the right direction.
Then again, the decrease in display size and resolution is surely not an upgrade. But are you honestly telling me a 4.7-inch panel with 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution is terrible? I don’t think so.
Wait, because I have one more argument supporting my theory that the Z5 Mini is a step up compared with its predecessor – it comes with microSD support. True, the on-board storage has been shrunken from 32 to 16 GB, but you can expand that with an additional 32 gigs, hence you can reach 48 GB of memory in total.
Oh, yeah, and the Nubia Z5 Mini also comes with a high-quality 5 MP camera… on the front. That’s in addition to the same awesome 13 MP rear snapper packed by the original Z5. Add in a quad-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G and TD-SCDMA support and I think we can all agree ZTE’s latest plays in a very different league than Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Mini.
And the kicker is the 4.7-incher is fairly affordable as well, being up for grabs in China for Yuan 1,888 ($306). Now if only this was to hit the West with a similar price tag…
